Had a company hire me for a short time project a little over 16 years ago, but gave me the illusion that it would be a long term/career move. Right after the project was finished, first week of November, they called me into the office at 5:30 on a Friday and told me, well we no longer need your services.

This was after I had moved from one city to another one. Fortunately, things worked out great for me, the company that 'fired' me, went out of business a couple of years later and I got my current job, which I've had for almost 16 years!

So, like I said, sorry to hear about your misfortune, but maybe this is the start of something great.

Gloriar, as I said earlier, I understand where you at because I have been where you are at.
With the world economic situtation as it is, I will probably be there again.

Having thus stated I know what you are going through, let me give you some valuable advice.
You have a job until next month some time from what I understand from your posting.
That is correct, right?
If yes, then during this Holiday season, unless there is somewhere you would really like to work after you are done where you are at, focus on and enjoy the Holidays instead of looking for work.

"Beating them to the punch." which is already impossible since they have already given you notice, is not a reason to waste this valueable family time of the year.
Spend the time with your family, working on those relationships that will last you your lifetime & into the eternities is critical now and then later find new work.
Spending your time stressing about losing your job and then looking for a new one will detract from this Holiday season tremendously and make it one you will always want to forget rather than one to treasure.
Always keep your priorities straight, with family at the #1 position, and you will find ways to make everything else work out.

Very little hiring gets done at the end of the year. Between the holidays, budget issues, etc. it just doesn't happen. I know - I monitor our overall new hires as part of the new employee setup process I developed.

Use your time remaining at your current employer to work on your skill set at their expense. Online training, projects, whatever you can find. Since they've made their intentions clear you need to find the most effective way to spend your time. And when I say 'most effective' I mean most effective for you. It's already very clear how the company feels about you.

Sign up on networking sites like and see who you know doing what. That's going to get you hooked into the environment more than online job search sites and the newspapers.

I'm really sorry to hear that this happened and no matter what anyone says it's going to make your holiday season less joyous than you hoped. But work your way through it and spend some time thinking about what you would want to do instead of what kind of jobs you can get. You might be surprised at what appeals.

Gloriar, are you stuck looking for work just in the Islands or is it feasible to go back to Continent to look.
There may be better opportunities on the mainland for you.


Let me clarify something for some folks who have a misconception going on here and elsewhere in the forums.
My age, which is a personal matter that I have not shared yet here due to bad experience elsewhere, has been earned.
I have endured those years and hold them as badges of honor.
I not the eldest here, but I am probably in the top ten oldest, maybe even the top five.
That means I have more experience than many here.
We learn from such so I believe I have a good deal of knowledge and a fair amount of wisdom that more than likely is different to at least a good degree than anyone else here.
That does not mean I expect everyone to agree with me, but I would ask for a lot less being dealt with as one of the youngest and/or derided simply because I am different.
If I descibe how I see something, and it is wrong at point, then describe how it is and we will both understand.
Poking fun and/or being demeaning, as someone my age sees it, will not engender any positive dialogue and we will not together benefit from the dialogue.

Does that give explanation how some of us been clashing here?
I hope so because my desire is to share so I can benefit and others might too as well.

Right now, I would not wish this on my worst enemy as the job market is extremely challenging.

We get threatened at work quite regularly, each week I have a job I am happy as it means one more week of pay.

It is incredible, I have just returned of the work and everything what I find in this forum is support and fondness. With my heart in the hand I give you sincerely thanks ... for the fondness, the support and your advices. Now that I know really what has happened in the work I am calmer. Worried but calmer.Im read one all your advices and honestly ... you all have reason.
A few months ago I won) to the Cancer without stopping being going to work.
2 months ago I overcame two heart attacks for the stress of the work... Not more.It is time to be a bit selfish and to devote myself a bit to my same one and to the people who surrounds me. It is time to live a bit and stop surviving.
Now with the cold head, I see this as a new opportunity to begin a new life for me and my family. The things are not easy nowadays in the world. But sincerely I want to believe that always there is a place for those who search honestly and with the heart in this life.

I actually have a heart condition, and suffer a few lapses of PTSD every now and then. Both were gained from being in the military.

I find that trying to live your life for others is so much more rewarding that trying to live your life for you. Not that any of you do that - live life just for yourself - I'm just mentioning it.
