I just won a 40k 5th tourney at my local store last week with a borrowed army, and went home with a battalion box of Chaos Space Marines. Coupled with the new Black Reach set, I can say that I will certainly be playing me some 40k in the near future.

I'm planning on building a 40k/Necromunda table with some of the Platform command stuff soon. I will post pics of the build once it begins. Gotta finish my 'Something Below' build first for my DandD game.

Well I am returning to 40k after 8 years. (A house and children will do that to you.) I purchased 5th edition this summer and that motivated me to field my (almost) all metal Eldar army once again.

Since me and my friend have not played in a while and are not familiar with the new rules, we decided to start using small 400pts patrols for starters. I plan to use the 40k in 40min rules. PCON is a perfect setting for that and I just completed 4'X3' board. Just need to build some platforms and walkways to dress it up.

I just hope that 5th is better than 3rd edition. We'll see...

Personally, I prefer 5th to 4th or 3rd. Much cleaner and more interesting.

I preferred 2nd edition. I hated 3rd edition and thats when I stopped playing.

I sold all of my 40k just before moving to the UK as I could only transport so much stuff by freighter. Space Wolves, Dark Eldar, and Tyranids.

Well, I had built an Imperial Guard army before and had ended up selling it. When news of the tournament cropped up I borrowed a buddies Guard stuff and made a list to play for a chance to win my own minis.

That was my original army that I had to sell. The Dino is a Chimera Tank, and all the troopers are 'grenadiers' which basically means space marines with toughness 3. The four armed conversions were an alien species that I was using as Ogryns and they were built with Kroot and Beastmen minis.

The story was lifted from 'March Upcountry' a book by David Weber and John Ringo (great book.) Basically, a Space Marine detachment crash lands on a primitive jungle planet filled with medieval barbarian age 4 armed aliens. They haven't enough power to operate more that a squad of power armor suits (the grey knights) per engagement, so the rest of them have to leg it without their armor.

It was fun. The list I won the tourney with was straight guard though. Ordinance won the day because my opponents were forced to move out of cover to take objectives and I was very lucky with my scatter dice.

Agreed! A very neat army. Also, I can highly recommend the March Up Country series of books by Johnny Ringo and David Weber. That's a great take on the characters from the book. Well done, Mupchurch!

Wow thanks I'm glad you like it. If you look hard you fan spot Roger and Desperaux (or however you spell it). Julian is I'm the powered armor and the tank is supposed to be Pattie. I've got some more in focus close ups of the mardukans and squads I can post later when I get home.

So which of the PC (or any other) set would be the best for use with 40K games?

Operation Nightwatch is sufficient for me, but there are a few goodies (control tower and fuel tank) that are interesting in the two other sets.

The other great set is Mars Station. It has hills, configurable futuristic buildings (with interiors), barricades and other goodies. In my opinion, it's perfect for Sci-Fi wargaming.

Mr.B, you could always use some paper minis to try the game before you invest yourself too deep. Their are some good Space Marine, Imperial Guard, and Necron stand-ins available from another site.

One thing I am going to try with a friend is an alternating activation system similar to Savage Worlds. On red, one player activates one unit, on black the other player does the same. On a joker, you activate two units. I think this will help balance the overpowerful first turn artillery barrage.

Way back in the day, I tried some alternating-activation with 40K. It did OK with the second edition rules, but then they modified close combat resolution and things break down pretty quickly doing it now. But if it works for you, more power. Please post the final rules tweaks here so we can all enjoy it
