I've watched "donationware" and "ransom" models closely for the past few years but in my opinion none have been genuinely successful in maintaining a viable full-time business. Yes, you can certainly make some money doing things that way but it just isn't enough (or at least not enough to pay real life bills concurrently). I say that because it does not account for long term residual sales that continue to roll in from older catalog items. Sure they sell at much lower levels but taken as a whole they still provide some buffer of stability for the business to grow and move forward.

These models purport to "solve the piracy problem" but all they are really doing is receiving donations from the noble few supporters who would have happily paid anyway. "Generation File Share" simply waits to grab it for nothing like they do with everything else. I don't think they can honestly say that this solves that problem, if anything it demeans the true value of the hard work that they put into the product.

I like the idea of a ransom. Though the name kinda implies a little larceny. A lot of times jobs get paid when we start a job and then again when we're finished. Call it a deposit instead. It will also VERY clearly inform you what people want...Hell, they've already laid out the dough. Guaranteed sales. Of course after it's made it's just like all the others. It just goes into the purchasable library...Right?
