Actually, they'll eventually be putting out cards for ALL previous sets. There was such a backlash about it only being backwards compatible for the last three sets + the All-Stars that Wizards put out a schedule and said they indeed would be making ALL previous minis and sets 2.0 compatible with downloadable cards. If I remember correctly though Harbinger, which would be the last set, won't be available till the end of '09.
I can't agree more though. As an avid D&D Minis 1.0 player, I was a bit resistant to the 2.0 switch, BUT having spent all last weekend playing, I love it. It's easier, faster, and retains the fun factor. I like the fact that a high point piece now can take on a party of "adventurers" and decimate them if they don't play thier "cards" right.
I know that I found the Immoliath to be a completly fearsome opponent when I didn't know it's card, just like the Large Gold Dragon from Night Below, who decimated one of my friends 200 point armies almost single handedly.
The best part? I get to continue to make boards and cities for us to battle over.

I am SO glad to hear they will be giving us cards for all the old ones. Makes me MUCH happier. Thats saying a lot! Not sure what it is, but the flavor of how things flow in this version justs feels great. A real pleasure to play. Honestly can not wait to go out and buy some more boosters of the new set and the last two (going to print out cards for those two ASAP so I'm covered regardless of what I get!)

Again I'm not sure what the schedule is for Card Releases, but it's hiding somewhere on the WotC website, it might even be in the forums. I, for one, can't wait to see some of my older minis, like Obould Many-Arrows, get the 2.0 treatment.
I really dug Morale checks in 1.0 due to the fact it could turn the tide so quickly and made the game feel like there was a bit of self-preservation for each character. I really thought I would hate it, especially since I play with a power gamer a lot who likes to mash me with power pieces. What I found was the idea of my war band standing in and taking the fight to it's bitter end is much more fun, in addition, the bloodied mechanic adds both a sense of desperation and a new flood of detriments and abilities that drastically change the game in the way a failed morale check never could.
The other thing I love is the streamlined rules: the easier diagonal move count, the attack types, the elimination of magic damage, magic resistance, and round by round regeneration. All of these are just examples of how the game has less round by round upkeep and instead is just faster paced.
I highly recommend getting more Deserts of Desolation, since Poison is just brutal and that set is LOADED with it. Night below isn't bad, it's just not quiet a power heavy as Dungeons of Dread. Although, if you can get your paws on a Large Gold Dragon, DO SO! That piece was a terror in 1.0, and little has changed in it's 2.0 incarnation.

It appears as if it'll be awhile, but the way I look at it is that they didn't have to do it and are bending to the will of the player and I like that. Not to mention as new sets come out, we'll be getting old pieces in 2.0 so it's like getting twice as many sets.

I finally found it.
The bad part is I don't see any listing for "Icons". So only WotC knows when we'll see restated Gargantuan Red Dragon 2.0.

From what I was told on the official forum, they did say the Icons will be done this year. No official word on when, though.

Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I figured I may as well continue this one rathert han starting a new one.A buddy of mine is running 4DnD, and wanted to get some of the minis to use for encounters and stuff.

Naturally I suggested we try the minis game itself. So he bought the four characters he wanted for the RPG, and the minis starter set, and I have done some aftermarket purchases from the two latest sets. We are slkated to try the game sometime later his week, I will post here to let y'all know how it goes.

After I made my first build, the CWU promo build, I picked up some D&D figures to flush it out, choosing just by look and cost. One of the people I gamed with also decided to get some and we picked the starter set too.

We did play several games. It was a decent game, but just playing to wipe out the other team isn't my thing. And with D&D each of the hundreds of figures has different powers some that change depending on the situation. I just wasn't interested enough to try and learn even a fraction of them. In the end our games came down to someone having a figure with a power that the other team couldn't deal with, so they won easily. After a half dozen games we just never played again.

I'm sure the game would be better if we didn't start with a hundred different kind of figures to pick from. If we'd only had small pool of them we might have been willing to really learn who could do what and make balanced teams. But with so many we just picked the first few who looked interesting.

Does 4th Ed change the Minis & rules/gameplay much? How independent was the Mini game from the original system?


The more I look at 4th RPG the more I think it's a very cool piece of gaming material - of course I do think that for a sexy tabletop storybased Wargame (small joke here) that having three core rule books is a tad bloated.

How much of 4th has leaked over to the Mini game?

OK, so we managed to play a couple of 100-point games last week (just took me a while to get around to posting about it.) And we decided that the game is pretty pointless if you just line up and try to kill each other. However, as "scenario" is my middle name, we are going to try again in a few weeks with 200-point warbands (read: we both decided it was still worth throwing good money after bad with it) and some scenarios instead of just killing each other. I have also finished a full-size underground board (CaveWorks) and am working on a VillageWorks board and Hinterlands board.

I will be posting my scenarios as soon as I have them formatted for y'all to peruse.
