Since I am stuck again unable to get a game group together I decided to pick up a random RP book and start reading, I do this often just to let my mind wander and think about campaign or character ideas. This time the book was Kindred of the East from White wolf and after finishing it I decided to read the 3rd edition World of Darkness core rules. After re-reading the core rules I *think* I noticed some of the same problems that someone else here on the forum mentioned before (I think it was the Grump) most notably that it is entierly too simple for characters be be reduced to a chance die with almost every action (in combat).

Has anyone else had a problem with this and what did your group do to fix it? My first thought for a solution was to change difficulty back to a base of 6 (like in 2nd edition revised) instead of 8 and slightly tweak the way modifiers work. Rather than just droping the number of dice that the character has the first three negative modifiers increase the difficulty up to a maximum of 9 and any additional negative modifiers above this would reduce the die pool as standard. Bonuses still add to the die pool as normal.

I'm not sure as to how well this will work since I haven't ran it through any dry runs yet but dose it sound simi-solid? Dose anyone else have a house rule they have come up with to address this problem?

PS: I'm so board that I actually started converting the Kindred of teh East Kuei-Jin over to the 3rd edition WoD character format (supernatural advatage, morality, 5 by 5, etc, etc...). I already have a good bit of it done and if I am still real board afterward I may convert one of the other 2nd edition supernaturals to the new format... I need a life...

Heh, I will admit that my decision was to stick with the old rules - while I like the new background at least as well I really loathe the new system. (I gather that by WW standards sales have been a tad... lackluster.) If I were converting WoD it would be going the other way, NWoD to the old Storyteller system.

And yes, it was me griping about the new rules. For me at the least 'simpler' does not always equal 'better'.

As an aside, there is another version of World Of Darkness in the works, this time around by Monte Cook. I will at least take a look.

The Auld Grump

I did some looking after Grump mentioned that and its a product called "Monte Cook's World of Darkness" also known as MCWoD. Sounds like something McDonalds would slap on a bun...anyway. It is confirmed to be a D20 product in the same way that SpyCraft 2.0 is D20. Sean Reynolds in attached as well working on some unique mechanics that he isn't allowed to expand on just yet. Due out in August.

Hmm, to be honest we usually use the WoD rules when we don't expect much combat anyway, the Firefly game had two fights in it and 1 was more of a quick brawl. I can't see me using it much in future either as I have lots of other systems I'd rather run (Spycraft, Savage Worlds, WHFRP, Exalted, Castle Falkenstein).
