If the simple ruleset me and my gaming group works out I'll put it on my site for free. The plan is to use ChunkyDungeons for the tiles eventually. We've done some playtesting and this Saturday I'll get the copies of the rules I handed out to my group back and that'll help me a lot.

Yes, traps could be a separate deck of encounters that came up when set circumstances happened (every 6th encounter, for instance). Or they could simply be built into the table of critters when rolling up something. Or you could have a table you roll on for every passage tile, with some results being "nothing" and others being a trap sprung (pit opens up, blades swing down, falling blocks, etc).

Of course, those might get a tad stale after a few plays, unless you devise a ton of them ... which is where having cool looking tiles comes into play! A tile which shows a statue in the corner or a table or bookcase can have a smaller table of "things" to roll on for that tile.

WHQ had the two adventure packs (one for undead and one for Orcs) that were themed encounters. There was a third in the works, but because sales of the other two were lacking, they decided to release it as a White Dwarf article instead (that was the Skaven adventure).

Again, it's possible to come up with themed adventures, it's also possible to come up with semi-random tables to use that "might" make sense. They won't be perfect, but they would be better than totally randeom.

I experimented with this, and discovered it was a LOT of work, not sure it was woth the effort, but I'd have paid money to get those tables if somebody else had done the legwork

What I did was based on how many "tiles" you were into the dungeon. If memory serves, if you were 1-3 tiles in you used one table, 4-6 tiles in a second table, and 7-9 a third table. For this purpose the "objective room" was the first room at the 10th level.

Anyway, my thinking was that lesser critters would live closer to the entrance. Big bad stuff could walk right past, say, kobolds int hat first room, because kobolds are not stupid enough to take on Black Orks. Likewise, that Minotaur wouldn't worry about the Orcs jumpijng it when it passed by on the way out to prowel.

And in a simbiotic way, the bigger critters didn't mind the kobolds in that first room, because they acted like an alarm system. The Orcs that lived further in woudl hear any battles the Kobolds engaged in. The minotaur would hear any battles the Orcs engaged in, etc.

At first, the tables included anything from the main lists, simply reorganized by prowess and grouped into layers. I used markers for whatever critter was encountered. Over time, I actually acquired some of the models to flesh out the dungeon tables, so few counters were used, and more minis.

But . . . it was a lot of work, and we didn't play often enough to warrant it. One of those "I did it because I could, not because I should" things. Had more time back then (kids were way younger, early bedtimes, job was not a headache either, wife liked to game with me).

I think WHQ stands up well for a game you can just sit down, set up, and get to playing really quickly, even with the randomness. The thing I did that I really enjoyed and was well worth it was adding new tiles to the mix. That was my first foray into cardstock terrain, 2D tiles made by several other firms. I'd print out the tiles, mount them on illustration board, make my own cards with a mini photo of the tile (just like the GW cards), put 'em in card protectors, and we were good to go.

As I recall, Terror in the Dark featured progressive room tables of a sort. Basically the deeper into the dungeon you got the more likely you were to find the objective room. It prevented the ever aggrivating "infinite dungeon syndrome" that was often encountered during our basic AHQ sessions back in the day...

Yes, AHQ is a fine game indeed. You can find the base set for a reasonable price on Ebay. Terror in the Dark, on the other hand, goes for ridiculous amounts of money. There isn't much actually in it, but its rare and the price reflects that.
Its easier to collect the White Dwarfs that had the extra rules in them. The only thing you'd be missing is the campaign itself.

I probably have most of those issues! Once I was hooked by GW and their sideline games (Warhammer Quest, then Necromunda) I started exploring other older games. Got into Blood Bowl, then Man O War and finally Mighty Empires. With each new addiction I started getting back issues of WD to fill in the blanks.

My collection is mostly in storage now, but I know it reaches back to 130 because that was the first article for Mighty Empires. Issue 130-142 also had the articles for Cnnfrontation - the precursor to Necromunda.

The issues covering HQ and AHQ spread from 121 thru 159, so I might have many of them. However . . . I'm not likely to pick the game up. Two reasons, when I get to game now, it's with a smaller group, and we'd all like to play (nobody interested in being the GM), and I'm so anal about having "all" of a game that if I DID buy the base set, I would "have" to buy the Terror expansion, regardless of cost.

This trait of mine is why I stay away from nearly all collectible games, I'll get caught in the death grip of the beast and buy every expansion until they stop! I hate that about myself, but there you go.

I get white knuckles thinking about the BattleMasters set I bought for my son . . . knowing there were two expansions for it that I DON'T HAVE!!!
