I figure Paizo was past End Of Life for Pathfinder when they started talking about other worlds. I think that there just isn't that much more to write about.
I think they are (wisely) waiting to see what WOTC accomplishes with 5e, and then figuring out what to do about it if anything.
I think Paizo did a fine job, but I think they need to rejigger how they role out extra material. Some books are coming up dry for useful material, and are probably doing OK simply because of fan boy spending (yes... guilty).
If they recalibrate how they do things for Pathfinder 2.0, what will they do?
Once again, my players remind me that AD&D stands for Attention Deficit & Disorder...
Two of the recent hardcovers go well past 'coming up dry' and into 'I really wish that this was out when I started my campaign!' territory.
Seriously - have you looked at Ultimate Campaign? It is one of the three 'must have' books, in my opinion, right behind the Core and the Advanced Player's Guide.
Whereas WotC came up dry with the 4e Player's Handbook.... (Yes - that is a ridiculous example - shown more for humor at my own double standard than actual merit.)
Considering that players have been whinging about wanting planar and alternate worlds campaigns.... Sorry, really don't buy that as as 'end of the line'.
But you have been crying out that Pathfinder is at the end of its line for several years now....
The Auld Grump, before the APG, if I recall correctly....

Hasn't Paizo said something about only ever wanting one edition of Pathfinder?
The big difference between Paizo and WotC is that Paizo built their business model around adventure paths, not rules sets. This is a very smart move in the long term, as it avoids the problem of eroding their customer base with each release - which has cost HASBRO/WotC over 50% of the market share for D&D.
The challenge for Paizo will be accepting that the massive increase in revenue they've received from publishing the Pathfinder rules is a short term bonus and is not sustainable in the long term.
Tabletop RPG's are a technology that's now 40 years old, which means that most of it has had plenty of time to mature. The core technology for rules based RPG's is well established (it's only in the field of story based RPG's that that's any real innovation going on). C.f. cars which were invented in the late 19th century but by the 1930s had settled into the pattern that is still used today - we could climb into any 1930's car and in less than 5 minutes be driving it comfortably. Cars get replaced because they wear out and because the hazard of driving is so high that occasionally safety improvements warrant retirement of less safe models. But RPG's don't wear out and they don't cause any hazard (unless you believe some fundamentalist preachers!).
As HASBRO/WotC have discovered, RPG'ers eventually conclude a) they have a rule set that's good enough for them and b) the next version/system simply doesn't offer enough to justify the cost and effort of changing. Add to this the fact that tabletop RPG'ing is a social game where the biggest constraint is finding compatible players and staying with an established system/version, even one with flaws, becomes a very attractive solution.
All of this means it makes more sense for players to settle on a well established RPG system that's had it's rough edges knocked off, than to repeatedly change systems/versions. And that's exactly what's happened with D&D. By the time D&D got to V3, large sections of the player base were seriously considering staying with their existing version. It took the OGL and creative material that became available under that to make V3/3.5 attractive enough for players to migrate to it en-mass. HASBRO/WotC then tried to supersede 3.5 and failed. Paizo elected to stay with 3.5 and polish it a bit more, and succeeded.
My biggest concern is if Paizo get too used to the revenue they've got from establishing the Pathfinder RPG, and fall into the trap HASBRO/WotC have of trying to repeat this every few years.
So long as Paizo stick with their original intention of making this version of Pathfinder the dominant fantasy RPG system from here on, and focus on making money from providing rich content that uses that system, then they will have succeeded not just in winning the fantasy RPG crown, but in establishing Pathfinder as a dynasty that can carry this crown for another 40 years.
As for Paizo extending Pathfinder to cover other worlds (sci-fi, etc.). This is the logical path for the rules side of Paizo's business, as it supports (rather than undermines) the work they've done establishing Pathfinder and allows them to gently wean themselves off any dependency on rules revenue that may have arisen as a result of the huge commercial success of Pathfinder.

Zenguy: Well said. What if anything should they change? And you're saying that if they roll out a new edition;
I wonder at what point they look at dwindling sales in Core Rules and decide differently.
Some of the material, particularly the Player Companions tend to be thin on useful content. Which is a shame. I quite liked the early Elves of Golarion book but very few others seemed to have been of that caliber.
The question I think I'm getting at is how can they make the business model they are pursuing more sustainable. (Should they roll another rule set.)
Adventures... few core books... What about the other materials? I usually like Campaign Setting updates. FEAT Bloat needs to be kept down (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats), yet how can they add more material is a more sustainable fashion? Do we need prestige classes if the core FEATs are as well done as they are?
I get a sense that they are struggling with how to add more material (like Story FEATs), while still maintaining game balance, yet still add some value for the game\players.
Once again, my players remind me that AD&D stands for Attention Deficit & Disorder...

Guys, keep to the topic. Keep it away from the other person, he said/she said, and any of the other pitfalls of debate. Most of all, keep it friendly always!
Back on topic:
WotC's fumble was not 4e so much as the decision to drop the 3.5/OGL ball. (Paizo picked that up very deliberately - their stated intention to have only one version of Pathfinder confirms that - and are having a great run with it.) WotC are now struggling to find some way to claim back the fantasy RPG market.
Murder at Baldur's Gate makes it clear WotC are trying to jump on the story-based-RPG bandwagon (the only truly dynamic part of the RPG rules market right now), in the hope of breathing fresh life into D&D. The problem they're having is they're trying to do this with a team and customer base steeped in D&D paradigms.
I think WotC would be better off buying up one of the up and coming story-based-RPGs (along with its creators) and merging that into D&D next. Unfortunately, this i s likely to prove very difficult given the huge culture differences involved (if anything, one of the story-based RPG innovators is likely to find it far easier and more successful working with Paizo to merge their system/ideas into Pathfinder).

"Murder at Baldurs" basically has a systemless design, where 4e 3.5 and Next stats are given as options. I could be wrong about this, but this is not a first for them. As I gather, (from a podcast) the recent "Encounters" games are being presented this way.
This would be a trend I could get behind. Adventures where any system could be plugged in. Concentrate on good stories, (with fresh solid ((stolen)) story mechanics), and thoroughly fleshed out environments and NPCs. Leave the needs of the system behind. Try producing great adventure modules that clearly define the new Forgotten Realms they are truing to reboot.
I could see more like Greenwood's systemless Realms bible. a half a dozen other books just like it covering, in great detail, some of our other favorite locals. I believe Wotc has been bringing back the original creators of old favorites to contribute to new products.
There is one thing for sure, I'll die with my boots on.

I think Paizo had a good core business model delivering RPG content - adventures and settings, with a profitable and growing back catalogue - which HASBRO/WotC's termination of 3.5/OGL forced them to extend. It was either die, trickle on as a 3rd party under much riskier and less favourable conditions, or pick up the market WotC was walking away from and if successful set themselves up for long term success.
As it happens, Pathfinder has been a huge success, fa more so than they could have anticipated.
The risk of that success is that it can become addictive. If that success has meant Paizo is now controlled by the rules arm of the business then they are headed for the same precipice HASBRO/WotC fell over with D&D.
If, however, Paizo is still controlled by the people who saw Pathfinder as a way to ensure their ongoing viability as a content business, then the furture looks good indeed, for paizo, for Pathfinder and for the now significant Pathfinder player base.
WotC on the other hand seem to be stumbling about and in the process inadvertently tripping over the content line. Murder at Baldur's Gate = D&D as a rules independent system! The more I consider this, the more it seems that the D&D next team may have lost their way (influenced no doubt by the failure to capture and hold enough interest) and are hoping that invoking the hottest realm of RPG development right now will somehow put a fire under interest in D&D next.
WotC have some great people on their team. But with Paizo having stolen their obvious target market, this team are having to find a whole new market to target and to do that with a new product development. This is bass ackward and it wouldn't surprise me if HASBRO aren't asking some hard questions about the merit of continuing to fund D&D next.

The D&D 5e team has already seen some turn over - with two of the people that started in key positions leaving WotC, for a second time in the case of Monte Cook.
I think that they have no clear vision for 5e - which may still be better than having too clear and inflexible a vision, which was a core problem for 4e.
Instead of a core concept they instead have design goals: 1. Backwards compatibility. 2. Simple core system. 3. Make Attributes count (looking back to AD&D 2e on this, I think).
And at least one marketing goal: 4. Bring back alienated players.
Difficulties: I really do not like what I have seen of the skill system - it seems to borrow the worst features of 2e and 4e.
The license - still no word, and without a robust license I think that 5e will fail, and fail fast. They only have one try at a good first impression. (In the case of 4e they largely failed at a good first impression even before the game hit market.)
Pathfinder/3.X/OSRIC/OGL - For the first time D&D is coming up from behind, and against a system that WotC themselves proved solid.
Once Burned, Twice Shy - a lot of fans feel betrayed - the 3.X crowd because of the way 4e was handled, and the 4e crowd from the way their game of choice is being discarded so quickly. This is where the plans for backwards compatibility is a selling point, and why WotC is making such a show of using 4e stats with the current test.
Hasbro - I do not know if the financial requirements that Hasbro put in place to avoid marginalization are still in effect. If so then D&D might well be facing an impossible goal - the same goal that led to much of the stupidity in 4e.
Though I think that another chunk of the stupidity was somebody trying to stuff the genie back into the bottle, and trying to call all the IP back to WotC rather than supporting the open license.
An open license that was written with the express decision to prevent the parent company from recalling all the material in the SRD.
A lot of the point of getting rid of backwards compatibility was so that they could avoid using terms used in the SRD - so that nobody could create an OGL product that just happened to be compatible with 4e.
So the game designers reinvented the wheel. But made it square, so that you could not exchange parts with the existing architecture.
Then the good folks at Kenzer & Company reminded them that 3PP did not need a license to make compatible material.
The OGL worked because it gave something to both parties, rather than favoring a single party. It limited what a 3PP could label as unique IP, but in return gave a safe harbor to use much of WotC's IP.
It also resulted in an OGL community, which continues to this day, though sadly damaged by the schism.
Any new license that WotC offers will need to approach the open nature of the older license - otherwise the 3PP that fed the success of 3.X will ignore the license, as they did the GSL.
As for trying to keep the 4e crowd....
For a long time I have felt that had 4e been touted as second D&D system - D&D Tactics! Tactical Role Play in the Worlds of Dungeons & Dragons! instead of as The New D&D! Love It or Leave! - then it might well have found a comfortable niche.
A niche that would have added revenue to the existing 3.X line.
Certainly 4e catered to a different style of play than 3.X - and has fans that are extremely fond of that style.
In some ways closer to a boardgame than a classic RPG. (And some of the most popular items in the 4e lineup are boardgames. Decent ones by most accounts.)
But I do not think that trying to rebrand 4e as a tactical game is likely to work at this point - which means that WotC may need to make a choice of which audience to pursue:
The 4e players who are disgruntled that their game is being pushed aside.
The Pathfinder players who already have a game that they are happy with.
New players, giving up both of the above groups as lost causes. (Worst of both worlds, and unlikely.)
I do not envy WotC in trying to rejoin a split revenue stream - the task may well be impossible.
The Auld Grump
*EDIT* Unfortunately, it is easier to see the difficulties than to see a way around them.

That article nicely sums up (without explicitly stating) why the OGL was one of the strategic pillars in restoring the commercial viability of D&D.
It's unfortunate for WotC that, having realised so clearly the importance of listening to and satisfying their customer base, they should ignore so much of what their D&D customers wanted when they initiated 4e. It's long seemed to me that 4e was driven too much by HASBRO, in terms of both a) trying to cater to HASBRO traditional customer base and not the very different demographics and inherent geekyness of the D&D customer base, and b) the greedy and ultimately self defeating desire to financially control all of the commercial creativity associated with D&D.
That last is crucial. Tabletop RPGs are by definition collaborative creative endeavours. Supposedly, HASBROS toys are too: HASBRO provides the toys, kids use them use imaginative play. But the creativity used in a table-top RPG game is far more complex, far richer than the creativity used in the type of play common to HASBRO toys. There will be some children who use their HASBRO toys in ways that is as rich and complex as a D&D game, but they are the exceptions. D&D is simply several orders of magnitude more creatively complex and collaborative than any other HASBRO product line.
The OGL recognised that it would be impossible for any one organisation to meet the creative demands of the D&D community for supporting products. If anything, the OGL set up an environment where independent providers took the risks of developing and proving the viability of marginal products. WotC could then endeavour to buy in or to replicate any of those peripheral product areas that turned out to be major successes.
However, for this to continue after WotC's buy-out by HASBRO, HASBRO had to accept that there would be a lot of independent commercial activity using the D&D brand that collectively represented a sizable chunk of the D&D market. This is simply too much for an organisation whose business model is based around owning and tightly controlling access to its own brands.
In contrast, Paizo grew up within the collaborate market model of the OGL, so they understand that to be truly successful a major tabletop RPG needs a far broader pool of creative suppliers than any one organisation can hope to provide. (This may be the biggest reason why none of those excellent but alternative RPGs systems has successfully challenged D&D/Pathfinder - they simply haven't been able to foster a big enough creative commercial base.)
This is why I think Paizo/Pathfinder are now the long term holders of the D&D crown: HASBRO's creative-commercial model is too constrained for the needs of the tabletop RPG market, whereas Paizo are steeped in the open creative-commercial model that has proven to be so immensely successful in this market.

Today Wotc posted their plans on what books they are planing to add to the Core rules. They include;
Tactical combat- for the 4e crowd Character customization- for the 3.5 guys Storytelling- for me "Downtime"- mass combat, politics, domains etc.
P.S. enworld also posted a survey that shows D&D products being played 2 to 1 over Pathfinder (VERY UN official survey not based on sales but hundreds of blogs and posts showing "interest" whatever that means)
There is one thing for sure, I'll die with my boots on.
My area seems to be a 40/40/10 split of Pathfinder/4e/other - with most of the other being Savage Worlds. This is only taking the fantasy RPGs into account...

Just seemed interesting to me (+65% D&D and 29% Pathfinder)
Considering how much you hear about how Pathfinder is "out selling" the "worst" of Wotc's editions (not much of a victory beating a runner with a broken leg) it fails in capturing more than 3 out of 10 players. While D&D, which has been making one wrong move after another has twice as many supporters.
It would appear that they have a huge untapped customer base to sell to. If 6.5 out of 10 are playing a product(s) that haven't gotten ANY support in years, over a product that has had constant support, it doesn't seem like much of a victory for the Pathfinder crowd. It is almost impossible NOT to out sell a company who isn't supporting a product. Not exactly something to brag about....
Can Wotc capture the players who already play their games? Seems pretty clear they have a chance. Pathfinder has been running unopposed for years and still get crushed 2 to 1 by NO PRODUCTS.
There is one thing for sure, I'll die with my boots on.
