I'm (hopefully) putting together a board game combining WWG textures with Fighting Fantasy style for the kids.

The board will come in 4 pieces: Forest, Caves, Dungeon & Castle and will be a simple game of 'roll the die, move that many spaces forward, take a card...'. examples of the cards are:

FOREST
•Wood Nymphs move you along. Take an extra turn.
•You eat some wild berries and gain 2 Stamina (if needed).

CAVES
•You lose your way in the caves. Miss a turn
•A strange, warm feeling comes over you as you cheerfully move forward 4 spaces.

DUNGEON
•You hear the disturbing cry of some unseen monster. Miss 2 turns.
•An arrow painted on the wall points the way. Take an extra turn.

CASTLE
•A statue eerily points the way forward. Take an extra turn.
•You discover a plate of meat on a table and eat it. Gain 1D6 Stamina points.

So the player can:

Move forward x amount.
Move back x amount.
Miss x turns
Gain x turns
Lose x amount of Stamina
Gain x amount of Stamina
Encounter a monster.

and I was wondering if you guys could help me with a few things?

1/. What terrain sets would be best?
2/. Any ideas for flavour text for the cards (or any other ideas the player can do)?

The game will be for my 6 & 9 year old and has the same premis as snakes & ladders (roll, move, roll, move, first one to the end) but will incorporate the FF style (Skill, Stamina & Luck) for fighting creatures.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

One thing I would love to see in this type of game (and I think it would be fun for the kids), depends on your layout. If you are intending a fixed layout, that is cool, but perhaps you could also have a tile deck which has a shape on the other side of what the next tile looks like (hall, T, dead-end), to randomize it some more. Maybe that could be the "advanced" version once the basic rules are down.

As for sets, Hinterland Forest and Dwarven Halls are up there. Are you doing a 3D/2.5D board? If so, you could probably use DH for dungeon and castle with different walls. Not sure about caves unless you have the old Caveworks set.

Yeah, what joydyhee said. A dungeon?cave works best when the path needs to be followed. Dwarven Halls is the best maybe, but Canals and Sewers could work just as well, so could Oubliette. Actually, I think I could do a pretty good set indoors with Thoumont and Friar. You could allow for different paths to the same objective with different traps and boosts. Think I could make an argument for Forests and Gardens as well. Anything that uses walls would work.

The idea behind the game is to use an A2 sheet of foamcore divided into quaters, each quarter has a different terrain, the terrain will be a general terrain, like grass & trees for the forest, rock for the caves, etc.

I'll then be using individual squares to create a unique path (sort of like the path on the green board at the bottom right of this image) which will lead to the next terrain.

So what I'm looking for is general textures without squares or paths. I have LHOTDK so I'll see about getting Hinterland &/or The Garden but are there tiles in Hinterland that don't have a path on them?

Is there an anchorless LHOTDK kitbash floor tile anywhere?

Anybody have any ideas for flavour text for the cards?

After a long thinking session I've changed the board game, it's now called "Dungeon of Doom" and takes place in one location (can you guess where? ). The board will be laid out something like the board I created a while ago and the game will be loosely base upon the Fighting Fantasy book "" as in the players must get from start to finish through a series of monsters and traps.



There will be a number of room cards that will be placed randomly on the 'room' areas of the board and each player will take a random Quest card which will state quests like "Find the Spear of Destiny" or "Amass 10,000 worth of treasure". The players do this by visiting rooms and fighting monsters and then reaching the exit.
