[D&D] Monte Cook Writing Legends & Lore

So, it is official, Monte Cook is writing a column for WotC, I don't know if he is still working for Paizo as well. He is taking over from Mike Mearls.

Rumours about 5e are already flying....

(Too soon, too soon by far, would be my vote, but, hey, the rumours are there, even if I think that they are wrong....)

5e? Wow at this rate they will be producing more editions then GW who it is rumoured to be releasing 6e as soon as next year. 5e only came out in 2008!

Margaret Weiss is now one of the folks saying that, yes, Monte Cook is working on 5e. If true then 4e will be the shortest lived edition of D&D, even if development takes three years. Still hearsay, mind.

This conversation has piqued my interest even more, now. If there is any credit to the rumors, this is likely to hit the RPG community hard (one way or another). I hope that he is not working on anything solid at this point and we are at least 5 years out.

On a side note, I would love to see Wizards do some well developed adventures. Pathfinder seems to follow that model and it is one I would like to have access to in 4e.

For me, I prefer to run off the shelf adventures. As much as I enjoy making my own, and I really really like 4e for it. Its still too much for my time.

Enter Paizo... All of their modules are extremely well written. Where ever possible they write the modules to appear not to be the railroads that they actually are.

Did I mention, well written?

So I got my hands on the "We Be Goblins" RPG Day adventure; (Its free to download, if you haven't seen it, I recommend you take a look.)

Reading this thing... its well written. Its certainly an irreverent approach to an adventure.

So it was only fitting when I chose to run it with a bunch of kids who acted, like, well, a bunch of goblins. Adventure and mayhem was to be had. We managed to run through it in 3 hours. The 'dare' challenges were a blast. (I feel, much better than a 4e skill challenge which it most certainly would be construed to be.) Final battle got a bit grindy as the players ran out of luck and managed to keep in the game by using the wand of healing to keep reviving the fallen.

I could probably translate this to 4e... and it would be very good. But why bother? Its ready to go in the Pathfinder universe.

With the big company with the big (D&D) brand and the big resources trending downwards, and the small company with the business model trending steadily upwards and gaining market share in the process, I'd say that was a vote for the business model that Paizo are following. I've always thought that the success of any RPG's is much less in the system than in the exciting moments of the adventures.
