I'd check setting and system.


I sort of don't understand why players would dislike Eberron. But it is noir... hardly standard fantasy fair.

You could take a page out of a marketing text book and ask your customers what they want.

I've never understood many settings, or their interest. Like Planescape, or Spelljammer... what ever. Freeport is a bit too piratey for my tastes, but its definitely a decent backdrop to an adventure.

In my past, the best campaigns and adventures I had were *sigh* off the shelf and reasonably straight forward, like the Temple of Elemental Evil. I say that because that may in fact be what you need to provide your players with. Not everyone needs a high brow adventure.

Eberron is a setting that has a bad rap for some people before they try it. I think it stems from them thinking the setting is something that it is not - Steampunk fantasy with robots. Even Magicpunk is a word I am hesitant to use. Nonetheless, I am hopeful that removing the setting from the campaign might help attract new players. I can always return the the setting at a later date if the players are for it.

I think that I will be going with a more generic world, without all of the intricacies of an entire setting in hopes of attracting the broadest audience. Also, I am all for using published products (Scales of War gets okay reviews, but is there another line of adventures people have heard good things about?). This is all up for debate and I will defer to my players needs, once I have more players.

As for the system, I really enjoy playing D&D with my wife and she is much happier with the 4e system and the fact that it is simpler. She doesn't have to rely on other to help with character building and whatnot. Fourth edition makes her feel like an expert. I have even seen her quote rules with this system, which never happened with 3.0 or 3.5 edition. This being said, Pathfinder is not beneath me, or anything like that. If need be I will look into it in the future.

I posted on forums last night, in hopes of attracting some new people. I actually have a new player that we have been trying to schedule a decent meeting time with. That should all kick off when I get back in a couple weeks.

Scales of war (SoW) is OK but you need to put a lot of meat onto the bones for some of the adventures or else it's just a long slog of fights.

If I was to run an 4E adventure path, I would probably go with (WotBS).

I think that in WotBS encounters are more varied, the NPCs are better fleshed out and there is a more cohesive story then in SoW.

Yeah... I'd recommend War Of The Burning Sky in a heart beat.


Scales of War if you're looking for a long boring series of dungeon crawls strung together with a note at the end of each adventure.


Maybe you could think a bit smaller, and just see if you can get them to play an adventure.

Has anyone ever tried Meetup.com for this kind of thing? Is it any good?

On a related note, and an ironic one at that, everyone is jumping at the idea of an Eberron campaign! Now, I am trying to get my ducks in a row and have decided that I have some funds to spend prior to the game (especially since we discussed the idea of a "group fund" for everything from snacks to game aids).

I know that I will be renewing my DDi account and I picked up some GameMastery face cards to go with the item cards I have, but I am at a loss of what else I might need, especially since I don't like the idea of spending money on things for no reason. I could, for instance, become an Ascendent member over at Obsidian Portal for some seemingly beneficial perks.

Instead of just jumping into any other purchases, I thought I would ask you guys what you think. Thoughts?

I have been working on amassing music. I have never used it in game before in any specific way. I plan on loosely following dmmagic's . (suggestions for speeding this process up would be wonderful)

I picked up a few packs of the new(ish) D&D Fortune Cards. They seem to fit the bill for promoting players doing cool stuff in game.

Terrain is something I am always working on, even just a little. I currently am planning on finalizing what I have already been working on and then busting out some more props (I have done ANY in over a year!).

Minis I have over 2000 D&D minis that were all picked up by booster packs and starter sets. The only way I will be picking up any minis is if at some point in the future I decide to either search out individual ones that I may be missing for the odd reason (likely, but not right now) or in or to complete a set in order to sell (not as likely).

Condition markers is something I have been using Alea Tools for. I am currently trying to figure out how to incorporate dmmagic's Condition Cards into my game as well. I made similar cards years ago, but his are way more elegant.

Personally I love Eberron, and the group I play with does as well. Granted I also HATE anything Forgotten Realms, sight unseen, and I can't really say why. So I understand people not liking a setting.

The group I currently play with met on meetup.com 5 or 6 years ago. We just had one, possibly two people need to leave for personal reasons (work gets in the way), but that leaves us with 4. Not a bad number. We know other people who are interested in playing, so it shouldn't be that hard to keep a core group. We like playing with 5 in our Pathfinder game.
