You do know the iPad does have a sdreader don't you?
The only drawback is that its an overpriced addon.

Sorry for the lag - I've been doing 11-12 hour days this week.

I hooked up the usb cable and plugged in the kindle DX and it pops up as a drive on my windows computer.
I renamed the file to classic battletech weapons etc and dragged into the documents folder (Kindle puts all your pdf books in this folder), then 'safely remove hardware' to eject the Kindle from Windows Explorer.
I started typing and the text box opened - I put in 'classic' and hit the button and it was the first entry, selected it and it opened right up. I tried the various zoom modes and my favorite is 'fit to screen' with the page rotated sideways for width. You can't fit all of one dimension (Length or width) on the display, but this way (fts sideways) gives the whole table width at once)

I took a picture but can't get it into my computer --cable is at work...

It looks like your best choice is to view the page sideways, the text is small but perfectly readable this gives the full width and down as far as the LRM 5 line (and then cuts off the LRM 10), hitting next page gives you everything from the "Missile Weapons" header to bottom of this page.

Again, sorry for the lag - its easy to put files on and off, and they will be readable if small.

I have been doing some of my e-book shopping on - Like Kobo/Borders they are not tied to a particular brand of reader. (Insert rant about B&N/Nook HERE. Yeah, you can read books purchased from Kobo on a Nook, but not the other way around.)

Helps fill some... odd gaps at Kobo (sometimes they have the second and third books of a trilogy, with the first still missing, etc.).

Baen remains the number one though.

To add to the list I'm thinking of buying one of the following







9" e-ink screens with full PDF capability (necessary since I plan to use them for math textbooks) and with marking capabilities.

any input would be awesome.

I'm leaning toward the Onyx Boox M90. I really like the dedicated functionality of all of them though. they aren't sleek like the ipad or versatile like a tablet, they are a device designed for reading things, and that dedicated ability is really valuable.

I have one of the $100 Sony eReaders, I got it for Christmas last year. The thing is great, it uses an e-ink display so I can read for extended periods without eyestrain. Page refresh is on the slower end, but not horribly so. Simple cheap and effective.

My wife has an iPad that she begged for. She uses it daily, it is convenient for her, she uses it for oddball stuff, like knitting patterns, music while she works out, occasionally an ereader, even for her chore lists. I think the thing is a waste, but she loves it so I don't argue.

I can't justify buying a tablet untill they fall below £200 for a 10",
My laptop is bigger more powerful and does more then the ipad 2 but cost far less.
The only down sides to the laptop is

1, Microsoft crap,
2, Its too big to carry around everywhere (took it on holiday and left it in the hotel)
3, Microsoft crap!

That's great. If I hadn't already gotten a smartphone (which does a 'good enough' job with the Kindle app) I'd snap that up. Save $$, get deals, and just ignore the ads when you don't wanna see them.

I have a friend in town this week that is getting deployed overseas and he plans on picking up a Kindle while he is here. Maybe I will get one for myself as an early b-day/late father's day gift

Has anyone had any experience with the nook? Not the color one, but e ink one. ()

I've messed with both the kindle and the nook and I seem to like the touch screen on the nook a bit better.

My brother and his wife have both, and he loves his Nook BUT it lasts less than 4 hours on battery, so he only recommends it for times you can keep it plugged in...


I love my kindle DX's long battery life, but i do envy his ability to run video...

Been playing with the Kobo Touch - much faster page turning than the older Kobo, and a longer battery life (which was [i]not[/] a downside of the older Kobo), in theory a month.

Page turning is faster than my roommate's Sony or a coworker's Kindle.

Now accepts up to 48G in a micro SD (I have an 8G micro SD, nowhere near full).

Smaller profile, marginally larger screen, slightly thinner, so far I am liking it.

Cool, how is it for reading PDF's mate, i might be getting one in teh next month.

If anyone needs an Android app to, say, play background music & sounds on demand, roll dice (1d2 thru 10d100 with a readout of total and sequential rolls and a GM option to make lucky or unlucky rolls), and keep important in-game information in an integrated journal, I happen to have one. *ahem*

My only concern is ive never used android, is it simple enough?

Also the app sounds fun, i liek the idea of lucky/unlucky rolls.
