Okay, so I broke down before the WW store opened, and got Chunky Dungeons, despite the fact that it's a 1.5" grid, and I need as many squares on the table as possible (i.e., a 1" grid).

Getting the 1" grid was really easy. Just reduced it by 66.7%, and voila! Way better floor textures than DungeonWorks Classic, which is still nice.

My main issue is with the shrinking of everything else. It may just look too goofy shrunken to scale, what with the 2" tall walls becoming 1 1/4".

What better way to find out, than to try it out? I started with a regular Chunky curved wall on a 3" x 3" tile. It was on a 1" grid, so I didn't have the luxury of the guide triangles to help out. I survived, tho.





Then, I made a whole wall, shrunken to 66.7%, and stuck the same mini in front of it.





As you can see, the mini could stand on tiptoe, and peek right over the wall. Kinda silly looking with even taller minis.

So, despite the extra work involved with trying to figure out how to arrange everything, I think MiniChunk will have to be 1" grid tiles, with full size walls.

Next up: the Doors of Doom! These are gonna be a real pain, since the full size doors are 1 1/2" wide. Let's see if it'll break me!

I really wanted to be able to have a Chunky Dungeons setup with 1" squares, but I deemed all that extra work not worth it. So, I just built the normal 1.5" setup, but I'm not entirely happy with it since it's 50% bigger and you can't have as much (scale) area in the same amount of space.
Thus, the 24" x 36" board that should depict a 120' x 180' area depicts only 80' x 120'.

I have an idea for you I've been kicking around.

Leave the grid at 1", like you've done. But instead of reducing the scale from 1.5" to 1" (66%), increase it to 2" (133%). I think this might work a whole lot better.

Sure, you're going to have 10' wide doors and hallways and such, but I think the look and feel will be much better than the reverse.

What I've done with the 1.5 doors is to strattle them on my 1 inch and make sure to have 15' of corridor around each door. I know that means I've got 3 squares for a door instead of 1, but I'd rather do that than monkey about with PhotoShop to get a thinner door.

So I get a full height wall on my 1 inch grid, just have to take up 15' of corridor instead of 5'.

I don't know what happened, but one of my posts disappeared. (Did I put it elsewhere by mistake? If you see these pics in another thread, let me know, and I'll edit that post) Ah, well. Here's the jist:

I started with columns, instead. (Then went on to the walls)

I had to decide what to do about the columns, but ended up making them simply fit on the 1" base. The faces at the top are a bit... gaunt as a result, but it doesn't look too bad at all.





Looks pretty good flanking the door, too!



Then, I started on the walls. Boy, these were super easy to put together in comparison! I shrunk the width of the small wall down to 1" wide and left the big wall at 3" wide.





Next, I'll try to tackle those gates. I have no idea right now what to do about the glowing pattern.

Okay! I started by making a few tiles, to see how well they work together. Fist, the gridding, at 1”.



Then, the cutting of 3/4” squares of Velcro. I can’t find my rotary cutter, either. Man, peeling the backs off ‘em takes longer than measuring, marking, and cutting ‘em!



Aha! I’ve figured out a quicker way to peel off the backs of the Velcro! After torturing myself for the first three squares and five minutes, I developed this over the next four squares and two minutes:

Put the square on the corner of the uncut strip of spikey Velcro to get some grip. Start peeling the corner of the backing off. If it doesn’t want to come off easily (and 95% won’t), grab the corner you just started with toothy pliers, and that’ll get it off! Now I can do 2 or 3 squares a minute.



Once the backing is peeled off, I use the Velcro strip to guide the square into place. Pretty handy, and it makes for more evenly placed pieces than I did by handling them without it.



Then, I took little squares of felt, and glued ‘em to the bottom of the MasterLinX tiles. I don’t remember anyone specifying what type of glue to use for this, so I went with the UHU Office Pen. I tried to put the glue on the piece of felt first, but that got more on my fingers, and some seeped through, since it was really easy to use too much. For the other three corners, I UHU’d the foamcore, then stuck the felt on. Much quicker, but a sloppier looking result. You’ll never see that side, though, so it’s not too bad.

Now, I’ve got a quickly made MasterLinX board!




Here’s a shot of some of the stuff on it. I left some spaces open to show the innards. Pretty darn stable, even the 1” square tiles, and even with heavier metal minis. Now I’m very glad I didn’t go with the 3/4” Velcoins. I don’t think they would have enough stability on the corners.



Next up: I go insane trying to make a ton more stuff!

Alright, I haven't made a ton more stuff yet.

I've been spending my time planning layouts, and trying to put off the inevitable building of dozens of wall sections. *groan* Dozens, I tell you! I did a nice 2.5' x 2.5' layout, but to do it will take 85 of the 3" walls alone.

So, I'm going to start, I think, by making mini-layouts that are 1' x 1.5'. One takes 21, another takes 17. After I have a few of these, I'll have enough to make the larger layout. And, I can have something to show for my work in the meantime.

I also went back to Michaels, and bought a ton more Velcro, then off to Jo-Ann Fabrics for some felt. I got enough black felt to cover two 2' x 4' boards, to see how well it works (and in case I screw up the first one).

I saw this black felt with glitter in it that'd be sweet for a backdrop of First Light! I may have to go back for that.

I got a can of Duro All-Purpose Spray Adhesive, too. It's for permanent bonds, and the can says it's designed for felt, wood, plastics, cardboard, and paper. I figure it should do the trick, and I don't have to make an ungodly mess emptying a couple UHU sticks. If it works well, I'll probably experiment with putting scrap cardstock on scrap foamcore to see just how much time I have to reposition before it sets. Not much, by what others here say.

I'll try to take pics of the process, and I'll post the layout designs I've come up with so far.
