at least thats the first that comes to my mind when im looking at the sets i purchased. well that and the interior missions in starcraft 1 ^^

I converted to using miniatures because to me it gives a sense of realism, completness, really puts the adventures in to context (when you put in a large or huge creature) and it really cuts down on the confusion and bickering of getting screwed over by inept descriptions vs differing imaginations.

I'm currently in an AD&D campaign where we don't use miniatures and although I don't bicker with the DM, he is constantly screwing us over with initiatives, surprise rounds and vague discriptions.

I'm going to try bringing some minis with me soon, but probably the best way to introduce this kind of thing - is to bring a rewritable mat. Once they get used to using the mat, then I will try fancier stuff.

Granted with WWG it'll take forever to make adequate terrain BUT it will look fantastic! And by then, hopefully they'll be fully integrated into using minis/mats.

But to talk about the same thing: " You guys just use minis when it comes to fighting? i belive ad&a is even more table topish and you move through whol dungeeons on the board?!

I too am new to WWG modeling. I have purchased the Planner both Titan, Streets, Mars Station, and now Cliffs.
Between the sets I believe I can come up with any type of props needed for my SciFi RPG.
I have been out of paper and Dice RPG for a number of years (I am 46 and brought D&D Basic to my High School back in the day) I have been a PC in a friend of mines Fantasy and GamaWorld adventures. He wanted to play a SciFi RPG and not GM so I stepped up to the plate.

In researching I was amazed at the push back against miniatures and props in RPG. Most modern RPG are seem more of a Story that the GM reads from to entertain the Players. This amazed me because back in my day the goal was to collect and build miniatures for gaming and I think I have been gaming long enough to call myself 'Old School" so I don't understand the push back against using Mini's and props especially form a GM, god that makes my life easier and keeps the PC's in line with actions going through multiple rounds.

Now back to the use of the planner for a GM.
I use it not only to plan out layouts to build also any type of map I need for an area of interest to PC and the Sandbox elements I use in my game.
I have designed ship deck plans, a space port (which I probably will not build but will have events occur there), and a very large Deep space Research Station which I will design in full but will only build out pieces.

The planner is an awesome tool for any GM in my personal opinion even if you don't ever build anything BTW I have been building pieces of the Mars set and really like the out come. I wanted to try a model before I got into the TLX building system. Slowly I am building my arsenal of props and mini's again after 25 years of not gaming.

i think most players understand Terrain, gamingmats, miniatures and other stuff as a limitation. My buddies are used to invent stuff in their minds and my guess is or better i know its the same with fights. I don`t know how familiar you all are with cyberpunk games like shadow run but in germany i would say its next do das schwarze auge one of the biggest and well those shootouts with magigicans and ki adepts , hackers and drones in some big corporation megaplexes have their own charm and are hard to bring to the table.

also there is the bad word: Perfectionism.
What i mean is the position of many of my friends :"if that mini hasn`T exactly the cyberware my pc has or the same cloth i dont want it!" i think the fear of proxing , or doing a bad paintjob, or even the need of doing a paintjob. are to much for most of the gamers.

Heh, when I started playing with miniatures there was no D&D! So I have been using minis since my first game, back in the mid 'seventies.

I only use minis during encounters - using minis when folks are just trucking along just slows things down.

One way to get folks used to using figures is to start a non-RPG game, like Mordheim. It gets them used to the idea of tactical thinking and using terrain to advantage.

Not to mention that Mordheim is just plain a lot of fun.

Semi related tangent: I have never played that one. Is it easy to pick up and run with?

Mordheim? Oh yeah.

I ran it for kids in their teen 'n' tweens for years. They picked it up pretty darned quick.

Plus, you might be surprised how willing your players might be to allow you to use their Mordheim minis in your RPG game. Make it an honor to have Bob's Orc Boss be the one that bops Bob balefully on the bean.

As mentioned, many, many times, Mordheim is available as a from the publisher. The adds a lot too.
