There was a product by GDW (original publishers of Traveller) that had a bunch of short adventure ideas tha a good GM could flush out. Can't remember the name, but there was one in it where a note was received by one of the PC's from a mental patient stating that they really were not nuts and was being held against their will.

The world was perfect for that sort of thing (high law level and a religious dictatorship). The message was also full of codes that spies use to set up meetings, etc so again seemed all plausable.

Well, let's just say all hell broke loose when one of the players decided that he had had enough stalling and went on a bloody rampage at the institution where this person was being held.

I have rarely seen such team work on trying to get the hell out of dodge. It was awesome.

Now the one thing that the GM had options on was whether or not the patient was really insane or a prisoner against their will.

Let's just say our GM wasn't spilling the beans anytime soon.

When Firefly came out and the story about the sister was unfolding, remined me so much of that encounter and picking up an unstable NPC.

Guess Josh Weaton played Traveller and maybe had a good GM like we had.

I will try to get to my Traveller notebook later and post some of my ideas for short adventures. I don't actually *play* anymore, but am still always working on stuff (you know, just in case Hell freezes over and I can run a camaign.)

If you can, post a little about your group and where your adventures take place so I can give better-fitting ideas.

One adventure that are character went on went something like this.

The characters were hired as private contractors for a research company that was testing a ship outfitted with a new form of star travel (warp drive).

While on the ship getting ready for its first test run, the ship was attacked by a competing mega-corp. To save the ship one of the PCs initiated jump to get away from the bad guys (we were way out gunned) at the same moment we started to jump the Head Scientist (NPC) engaged the Warp Drive.

We found out what happens if you engage warp drive in Jump space... You wind up in a totally uncharted part of space making deals, alliances etc. with very strange new worlds to get the parts to fix the warp drive to try and reverse your path... or find another way home... once we locate where home is.

We think our evil game master dropped us off near the center of the galaxy, but we were never sure.

That sounds like fun!

Because of the trade rules, I have always favored a tramp freighter style game, with the PCs shiftng cargo from one world to another - with adventures on some of those planets. So the first four worlds might pass quickly, as the crew of the Good Ship Venus (or what have you) pick up and sell cargo, but on Holsten's World something happens....

It made for rather an episodic campaign - where adventures did not necessarily form a coherent whole. Rather I just placed adventures on various worlds, and hoped that the PCs would eventually stumble upon them.

The exception was a series of adventures that was triggered the same way, but would come back to haunt the PCs over and over again. The PCs had drawn the attention of a widespread criminal cartel. And the police, in turn, used the PCs as their stalking horse.

One of the things that I liked about Firefly was that it harkened back to those long ago Traveller games.

The Auld Grump, now, it is not rumor. It is solid. Solid.

I like that idea, T-G. I've started the secrets of the ancients campaign though so I gotta keep going with that now.
