For a lot of people, the problem with science is that they let the vocabulary intimidate or confuse them, and they don't see the underlying common things that run through a bunch of different topics.

First, the vocabulary- in science, just like like in things like working on cars or cooking, sometimes what may seem like a small difference (engine oil vs brake fluid, baking soda vs baking powder) can actually be very different. In many respects, however, learning it isn't that hard. If you can start to learn what some of the root words are, you'll discover that scientists often construct the new terms using roots that'll tell you what the term means. For example, if you know "lys" means to split or break, then it becomes easier to learn that 'hydrolysis' is splitting water, and that the 'lysosome' is a cell part that breaks down materials.

Next, the underlying principles- that's the tough part in some respects. To figure this stuff out, you need to always ask "why?" For example, you can memorize that pH and temperature affect enzymes and other proteins, but if you ask why, you'll eventually come to realize that enzymes can do their work because of their shape. Extreme temperatures and pH changes can interfere with the bonds that give them their shape. Now that you get this, you'll get why lactic acid makes the proteins of your muscles change shape so you lose strength, why you may pass out if you change the pH of your blood, etc. Ideally, you have a great teacher that you can ask to help you figure this stuff out, but that's not always the case. This may require you to do the figuring out yourself. A lot of times, trying to explain diagrams to yourself, watching videos of processes, and trying to make connections between units is the best way to do this.

Youtube has a number of videos on all sorts of science topics that can help. I myself made a bunch at brightstorm.com, but without knowing what topics you're covering, I can't make any more specific suggestions.

Thanks Pershadow. I'll check out your site for Bio 20 next semester, and I'll keep that advice in mind. Part of the problem this semester was that my Science teacher is a physics teacher, and so she didn't teach the chemistry or biology units as well as she could have. She was great for physics, not so much for the other units.
