One common alternative is to buy/get ahold of figs from something similar like MageKnight and re-base them. Just pry/cut them off those big plastic MK bases they come on and get some cheap 1" round plastic bases and glue them onto those.

Some of the Mage Knight figs are a bit odd for typical D&D fantasy, but they DO have a bunch that look cool.

Another route is the Toy Soldier Company: www.toysoldierco.com

They have fantasy as well as historical and modern. They have some great looking minis from LotR sets. The only problem is that their pre-painted ones are VERY expensive. This beautifully painted knight on horseback costs $22:



If you're looking for unpainted minis, their prices are better. (they're still not stellar, though) Here's a set of 24 soldiers for $27:



Make sure to read the description on each mini/set to verify on whether it's a painted fig you're getting, though. They'll show painted pictures for their unpainted ones quite often. And check the scale of the minis 'cuz they carry all sorts of different scales. That knight on horseback up above is 54mm, for example.

Yeah as of Early Nov 2010, molten claw was the last release, it is a very recent event, many saw it ias the final nail that yeah DDM would be next.

It kinda seems like WotC is struggling a bit... I mean they've cancelled Star Wars RPG and minis, DDM, Heroscape, and the D&D Miniatures game all withing a fairly short time period. I hope they continue to make Axis & Allies - but I don't really care about the fate of the rest of their products Although I was a bit sad to hear that heroscape is taking the cut, and the same for DDM.

As mentioned, EM4 is pretty reasonably priced. Not the best paint jobs but, for the price, not bad. Available in the States, and I think Canada, from .

Looking at the example of the painted Minas Tirith figures from Toy Soldier, I would recommend a Dip, to add some depth. (One part Future floor polish, four parts water, brown ink until you like the color.) You can literally dip the figure in it, pull it out, then shake it in a box or over some newspaper to remove the extra.
