I picked up Duel of the Planeswalkers for the XBox 360 - playing against the AI is a pretty good way to familiarize yourself with some of the newer terminology. I hadn't played since around 2000 so I hadn't heard of things like dual strike, deathtouch, or phasing (at least, not that I remember). Downside is that you can't really build a custom deck - you have to use a prebuilt and can acquire new cards to use as your sidebar (and some of the decks are really quite terrible).

I picked up a starter set for my wife and I a few years back, but she wasn't really into it. More recently I have started playing Pokemon with my girls, and that is our flavor of the month.

I was on a mission from the end of the 1990's to the beginning of the 2000's to collect full sets of everything. I stopped playing at Stronghold and picked back up at Mirrodin. In the middle, I collected. I was almost there (up to Cold Snap), then I decided that I probably was not going to have much time to play anymore (not to mention $$$ to invest). I was going to keep all my cards for my sons (almost 4 & just over 2). My older son already has an interest in fantasy, and he likes looking at the cards, but I decided to get rid of them.

I sold most of my top cards off early on (dual lands, Mishra's Workshop, Time Vault, etc.), and then kind of sat on the rest. I am in the middle of an inventory for them now - I estimate I still have about 20K cards; I have finished inventorying the rares and uncommons (a bit over 8,000 in total) but I have not had the heart to do the commons yet.

As for playing, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The early sets were fun, simple, and really provided enough variations to keep it interesting and not be repetitive. As they added sets (and new rules with sets), it was still fun, but if you are not in the loop, it is hard to manage all those rules (which is why they started printing summaries on the cards themselves).

I will play with my kids when they get older if they are interested, but I expect all of my collection to be gone by then.

I dropped out after Ice Age (which I had a complete set of) and sold my collection a few years later vastly under-priced.

I don't really miss the game. It was fun while it lasted, but it wasn't a really clean design (neither rules- nor art-wise), and I prefer other card games. If the mood for a two-player, quasi-CCG strikes me, I unpack my Netrunner or my Guardians cards. Or I play Dominion, which feels just like a CCG, but requires much less money spending, and is easily multi-playerable.

When I think abut the money I've sunk in MtG, I shudder...
