Hordes - What is peoples thoughts on this game? Is it worth the money/time to get into for a bit of fantasy smack down? I haven't played WM since it came out so no real point in drawing parallels to it if there is any. I like the gist of WM back when it was touted as handful of miniatures per side - not full armies. Look where it is today.

I am looking at starting to paint again - being in the GW store the other day awoke my slumbering desire. Though the thought of painting up a War of the Ring army leaves me with cold sweats. No I was thinking something else. God knows what really.

Hordes is similar to Warmachine, but you have to actually piss off your creature (ie get him into battle and get him "f-ed" and then reap his anger to cast your spells or boost your creatures.

The fluff is incredible, but I also like the gameplay. Plays different that warmachine, so when played together offers a bit of a shake up from your normal warmachine only or hordes only game.

Warmachine you manage your focus (or magic) to cast your spells or boost your warjacks. so a different system of managing your magic.

In Hordes, if you don't reap your creatures anger enough, he'll go nuts and start killing anything near, including his own side. Nice touch, keeps you on your toes.

If you like warmachine play style and want something with a little bit of a difference, then Hordes'll do ya.

Speaking of painting a WotR army, I started on mine. Finally got some primed (with some satin krylon white...not bad but will go on very heavy if your not careful). It took me nearly half an hour just to black in the armour areas. Next step is dry brush/highlight with silver, then flesh, straps, then dip. Only reason I am drybrushing the armour is because I want it BLACK black with silver just along the edges. The dip would just make the silver look rusty, not black and naturally the dip wont show on black at all. Hopefully I can get this speeded up for the next steps. Somehow I doubt it. THIS is why I stopped painting...so time consuming!

Ummm... what are you painting? I know it has dark armour but I have NFI as to the end effect.

...of course I am. Will make sure to get some shots of the remaining white ones and the blacked in. Have to soak a couple as I laid on the primer too heavy and obscured most of their chain mail. My second batch came out MUCH better.

Depends on your Play Style Lord A.

I like Trollbloods cause, well their Trolls and use blunderbus' and just look cool.

The Circle of Orberos is cool if you like werewolf type creatures.

If you go for cryx in Warmachine, then Everblight is your thing (especially if you like corrupted elves)

Again, depends on your play style.

I have the starters for all the factions, but then concentrated on Circle and Trolls.

Reading through the Privateer Press forums strategy section might give you a better clue on what you might like.

I've been using the No Limits rules from Wargames Unlimited They have a Sci-fi rule set and a fantasy rule set as well. I'm pretty happy with them and they work well for my 10 year old son and I. (not to mention I wrote the Skree Army list )

I had started playing 40k back in the Rogue Trader days but stopped shortly after college. I had a sizable eldar army (even an Armorcast Tempest). About 10+ years later I wanted to get started again but I was bummed out that all my guardians with lasguns couldn't be used anymore. A few years later I found Wargames Unlimited. They provide the base rules and some army lists and even an army creator so you can bring your exiting armies into the game.

Anyway my 2 centimos

Alright, I promised pics, heres your pics.

So a few notes about this. First, satin finish spray paint is a BAD IDEA. Its so smooth that it takes at least two coats of paint to get anything to stick. Its ok this time, but next time I will use flat. Secondly, I did all the black and then all the drybrushing...and then I got impatient and finished a single figure by painting the flesh and then leather straps. After that was dry, I painted on some water based wood stain. Was not sure if it would work like the varnish-y type, but lo and behold, it seems to work well! That said, the shot above is after only about a half hour of drying. Its still quite wet. Will post a final-final shot tomorrow once it has time to fully "cure".

Oh, and my forearms HURT since I have not done this in so long.

Here is another shot of it post dip after drying for 24 hours. I think it flattened out nicely. Notice the blue is just a trick of the light and its actually a nice metallic silver.

I tend to prime black, dry brush, wash, then redry brush. Its the best I can do with my eyes going.
