Outpost Tower... here's what I've got this evening:

One idea for the walls that will hold the posts up:



These will work with the 2-way posts from the camp walls I did. I'll just make versions of both that have no grass on them, so you can have upper floors.

I'm thinking some low railings would hold the tiles to the posts pretty well. Not even railings - just something that will slot into the sides, and in the corners would extend down to catch the outside of the posts (without you even noticing it). More to come!

I just never got time to finish off what would have been a megabash due to my insane work schedule. Maybe we can work together and get the combination of our work released quickly.

Anyone out there have Mayhem Junkyard and can comment on how well the ground tiles mesh up against the TLX Hinterland Forests tiles? I'm looking at this promo shot:



and I'm thinking that maybe not the tiles covered in tire tracks (though I can't tell - could they pass as wagon tracks?), but maybe some of the muddy tiles like in the upper right, or bottom middle next to the gate might serve me well as a base for village tiles or, dare I say, a well trodden orc camp.

There is no full muddy tile in Junkyard, only part grass-part mud, and the grass in yellowish in regard to Hinterland, but as the same "texture feel", meaning that with a small hue adaptation, they could match.

I remember an old bash, no longer available now, which offers a full dirt tile and transition to the pre-TLX hinterland grass, and another bash with marsh tiles, again, compatible with pre-TLX hinterland. If you have access to those bashes, it could be interesting.

I don't have a lot of the old stuff...

I might be fine with a yellowish grass texture and dirt. I can make full dirt tiles if I need to pretty easily, and I can blend the grass so it's kinda yellow, kinda hinterland, so they will connect together pretty well. I'm all about making custom tiles - I just need the raw materials to start with.

Now, if Matt were to see some of these kitbashes and think "Geez - Mike is really working hard here to keep the community going, and he's clearly not out to screw the place over - maybe I could covertly help him out by slipping him some .psd files with some raw layers he could work from." ...

Or not. I've got the clone tool, and that means a LOT in this business.

I'll add it to my pile of things to buy. I'll build the port-o-potties for my kids and tell them it's an early version of the Tardis.

Now, if Chris or (god forbid) Denny were to have a change of heart and put up some of the old sets in The Vault - Caveworks and Crystal Caves, Skill Cove, Villageworks... I'd snap them up here! Y'all wouldn't even need to update the storefront or make an announcement or anything. Just *poof* - they're there!

Now, the posts lack grass at the base, and I might just go sans grass on all of them for the kitbash - I don't think it adds enough, and clearly you'll want no grass on the upper levels...

The walls were actually cut with the robocutter, despite my printer skewing the printout quite a bit. The cutter was off by about 1 - 2mm on some edges. That's what markers are for.

This weekend, I'll try to build the other two walls and posts, and put on a floor. Then I'll build some railings for the floor to make sure it holds in place nicely.

That is the most clever use of a TLX wall. Amazing idea!

It's actually kinda like some of the Sector Sigma walls, though these look less out of place in the setting than giant steel girders would.

Hmm ... [mind racing] ... similar TLX wall for 3" / 6" steel tower a la watertower, radar tower, bridgework support over river/canyon/chasm, ...

How exactly does one get INTO an Orc Outpost Tower? I'm making up some ladders right now. I was planning on two styles of ladders - one that is just a free-floating ladder prop, and the other will be a TLX ladder that slots into the tile. Here's the free-floating one:



Now, I did this picture up to ask a specific question. On the left, there's just a black box around the ladder. The idea is that you'll sandwich fold the front and back together, then cut around the ladder. The same is true for the one on the right, but I've gone and filled the whole background black. I figure this way if you don't want to cut around the inside of the rungs, they'll blend better on the table.

What do you prefer? I'd imagine that the black one will give people the most options - you can cut out all the details, or as little as you want. I'll be robocutting mine, so what do I care? That's why your opinions will count!

In the mean time, I'll work on the TLX version, which is wider and plugs into the TLX tile. It's a style that was used in Sector Sigma, at least, though I plan on only having a TLX tab on one end (the top).

TLX Ladders are looking pretty promising, though I'm still working on adding some rope textures to it...

I need to do up some cutfiles, but at this rate, I should be done with this kitbash this week.

Personally, I prefer to cut out the sections for the see-through look, but understand the convenience of black backgrounds. If it's practical to do both black and clear background then it would take less ink when printing the ladders for cutting out.

And an optimistic question/idea: Do you think the ladders will be strong enough to hold mini bases? If so, making the slats long enough and close enough together to hold a mini base would be awesome.

I personnaly prefer the black style, because I get pretty lazy and don't own a robocutter

A little planning goes a long way. I'm thinking the *right* way to do the hidden grid on the tiles is to have ropes that delineate the vertical grid lines, and widen the shadows between boards along the horizontal grid lines... Except that the horizontal grid lines fall right in the middle of the logs...

Just resize it? I might. They don't line up all that well with the edges, and it's not that noticeable. It just would have been keen if I had thought that far ahead...

Second part to the Orc Camp - the Outpost Tower - has been officially submitted. I'm confident that if I've screwed something up (and, honestly, there's at least one boo boo in every submission I make!) the judges will let me know.



I really like how it turned out. It looks great with the palisade walls, too.
