I had this 3" wall bit on my harddrive for ages, and just dusted it off.



I don't know how well it'll really pan out, but I'd like to whip up some 3" and 6" variations, and posts using the wood texture, and see how it looks on the table. If I like it, then you can bet on me making angled, and arc variations of these, as well as sub-3" lengths.

Looking at some example palisade walls (e.g. ) leads me to believe the posts I've got there are a bit large, but I think given that I'm working in paper and I don't want to have lots of gaps or holes, I think the larger logs work OK. I might want to overlap them a little in order to allow me to maybe make them bend a little rather than being purely vertical, and I want to am sure I can do better on shading the cut tops.

I've got a lot of sketches from a long time ago about other ideas (for example, a TLX wooden guard tower, and wooden spikey wall thing that I think I just learned is called a "cheval de frise")

Sorry - I know I come up with ideas that don't immediately come to fruition...

What's gotten in the way in the past is my overly high expectations. I'm going to be a little more realistic on this one. I've got a 3" and 6" wall segment done, so I'll do some posts next. I'll try to post some pictures once that's built. Since I've got a template for 1/2 height walls and posts, I might try those, too, with a transition wall between them. That might be kind of neat for something.

To decorate the walls a bit, I'll look into adding stuff like cow hides, heads-on-stakes, war paint, blood splatters and maybe arrows sticking out of places. I don't know. I don't want to over-promise.

Well, on one hand, I could make a sheet of random stuff to glue anywhere you want, and I might do just that, but it's a pain to cut all those things out - especially smaller details. So, I'll try to make a variety of walls. It'll already be a pain to cut out the spiky posts...

I went and made spiky logs from both hinterland wood textures, and I'm cleaning up my wall templates. I'm gonna stick to the basic 5 for the first pass - 3", 3" angled, arc, 6" and 6" angled. I'm not doing anti-warp walls, but I could make sheets of triangular attachments to put on the walls if people want them. I'm holding off on walkways and scaffolding until I get to the other bits of what I've sketched out.

I've only got a handful of logs to work with, made from the Hinterland Forests log textures, but I'm trying to avoid the patterns being too repetitive.

No robocutter this evening, so I'm only making that little bit. Definitely the longer walls will make more sense with this stuff...

It's amazing what you achieve, and more, you take any suggestion seriously and see if it's feasible without complaint. You're a saint!

In keeping with the spirit of kitbashing, I've found some stuff from Swampwood Village... There are animal skins (from Hut.pdf), albeit a little furry, that I might use to adorn the walls. I might also make some walls with heads-on-stakes a-la Props.pdf. A lot of the props from that set would go well with these walls, so if you don't own it yet, take another look at it.

I'm thinking now that the Swampwood Village might be a good base for the scaffolding and towers... Since I'm planning on making the scaffolding a separate kitbash, I'll make it a derivative from Swampwood Village. There are no kitbashes for that set!

I already own Swampwood Village, so I am (selfishly) approving of your intention to release a kit bash for it.

Request: an insert for a big spikey square point to slip into the top of the TLX post ... it seems just a little odd for a "hollow log" to anchor a wall (lol).

Ok, taking advantage of some quiet time. I'm going to send what I've done so far off to the kitbash judges to see what they think - let them have a closer look. The kitbash will be called "Orc Camp - Walls". I think really the only thing missing is the spiky toppers for the posts, and cutfiles!

Kind of had a 'duh' moment while trying to make little 'toppers' to go on the posts... Maybe this won't work so great for all types of posts, but why not just make the area over the TLX tab that slips into the post have a wooden point on it? Then, when inserted, it'll stick up like the rest of the wall.

I mention this because I think the idea of having something slip over the top of the posts is a waste of effort... The topper bits are too fiddly to build and get to stay in place, and you're gonna lose them...

I'm not sure if making the walls stick up like that will work well in all types of posts, or if it will just look silly. I might try it out. Since I already have the post and wall files ready with cutfiles, I'm going to try to build out a larger fenced in area, and see how it looks. I kinda think I'm not going to notice the posts all that much.

I think that's a good idea--attach them to the walls just above the tabs, rather than the posts.

Can't do much at work but doodle on some paper...

I'm thinking the next thing I'll build will be a watchtower. Here's my plan:

1. I'll take the posts from the walls I've been doing, but I'll remove the grass from the bottom. I'll also probably consider 2-story variants of the posts, but I don't think it's necessary.

2. I'll make wall segments that are really just additional vertical logs on the sides and two logs crossing in the middle. They'd be lashed together with rope. That would form the supports for each level.

3. For tiles, I'll either use the walkways or the hut bases from Swampwood Village.

4. No stairs - just ladders.

I'll think about a roof. I won't consider doing a full TLX roof with trusses. I might just come up with some flat thatched roof, or maybe some sloped thatched roof using the textures from Swampwood Village. Alternatively, one could just use the log floors as a flat roof.

I'm doodling some ideas for other wall types, like log walls or plaster walls. I'm also thinking maybe some low rails...

I want to keep it pretty simple for a first pass - just enough pieces to pull something off.
