If I were to want to play a table top game with Zombies, but I personally own no zombie miniatures or zombie RPG/boargame rulesets where would you suggest I start? (what about if I have a copy of Zombicide and Zpocalypse coming in a few months...?)

Things that would be ideal:
-WWG Terrain can be used
-Low cost
-No mini painting needed
-Simple Rules
-Varied characters that might even have a level of customization

Other than that, I could see enjoying a board game and also enjoying an RPG. Cooperative would be nice but not a limiting factor.

Note: the most recent thing that sparked this interest was playing Zombies!!! today for the first time. It seems to be close to what I am looking for and maybe I should just wait for my board games to arrive. I am just hopeful that one of you might be able to help push me out of my fantasy-only bubble.

I have yet to find anything that I truly love. Zombies is fun. Zombicide looks a TON better. Personally waiting on that one myself.

Fear and Faith by Ganesha games can do zombies, for about $8. It's based on the Song of Blades and Heroes rules and is easy to learn and fast to play.

Well I know this does not fall into the board game category but it does lend itself to a bit of a RPG. How about All Things Zombie (ATZ). You could use standees as minis and it works well for WWG terrain.

Look for the Last Night On Earth gameboard from Flying Frog Productions. It´s fun, a little more complex than Zombies!!! and it´s sort of a simple RPG.

Free download, print it yourself and it's fun play. Just add walls and props from a few Mayhem set and you're good to go.

Searching around after your recommendations I am looking at these for various reasons (note that some are what I discussed above and some are pretty different):

I put together the Zombie in My Pocket game and played it a couple of times. It was worth the ink. I can see myself playing this instead of Solitare.

I just finished printing and cutting Zombie Plague and am going to cut out Zed Deck next.

Edit: Printed and cut Zed Deck and even played it once (ending with 12 supplies and 3 life, not bad for a first time).

Zombicide rules posted today for backers to see. I haven't had a chance to look through them yet, but am anxious.

I just downloaded Zombie Plague (thanks Matt!) and am going to grab Zombie in my pocket.

'7ombies' is fantastic (crooked dice). Fast, cheap and has not real setting. You can advance characters or just go zombie-nuts. I used my toy soldiers from SoTR to start with. British Paras falling foul of the dreaded nazi-zombies makes for some happy-times and a few good war stories. You can even do a cinamatic/tv style game where you have to get audience approval to help you in your next turn.

ATZ is also very, very good. Only bought it a couple of weeks ago, but after a quick read through I was fired-up. ATZ is as detailed as you want it to be. There is a 'campaign' style section and I think there is a separate suppliment which encourages you to build a post-zombie society. It reminded me of Necromunda/Mordheim to start with, but it contains a reaction system so unless you are Rambo sometimes it goes very bad, very quickly. I love it and it plays very fast. Again, I used models we had. However, I sense a period of investment coming-up..............

For pre-painted zombie figures in 28mm, Horrorclix are your best friend. I had almost 30 of them in the small box of Horrorclix I bought a while back. They're easy to pop off of the clix bases with a simple hobby knife, and I ended up re-basing them using the tokens that came with the first three Terra-clips sets. We've used them for playing Zombie Plague a few times and people love them.

If you want something with a little more oomph to the system, although quite similar to Zombie Plague look up Dead Walk Again. It's a skirmish rule set (and it's FREE) for playing zombie survival scenarios and there is at least one official campaign available. I think there's a zombie dog expansion and a Left 4 Dead re-theme of the rules out there too. I'm actually working on preparing paper scenery for the DwA campaign so that my friends and I can play through it this fall.

My preference is ATZ:BDTZ - there is also After The Horsemen; a post-Apocalyptic game coming out that is compatible with ATZ.

Genghis Ska - Ghost Studio - the Chinese company that produced the plastic miniatures for Wargames Factory used unethical means to secure ownership of the company.

They withheld delivery of manufactured plastics until WF was forced to default on monies owed, then used that as leverage to take over the company.

I got the "last night on Earth" zombie game with all of the expansions. they have quite a good card selection of funny and interesting cards both for the zombies and for the survivors. and I even put together a mini campaign using the ideas from the different mission cards.

I painted all the minis, had fun chopping them up to look different changing out heads leaving off arms using the soldering iron to make holes through them and found a few others online that I couldn't resist, although the set comes with 20 mm miniatures a few 25 millimeters are my big brothers.

I then took and made the tiles a little bit bigger than the original tiles that came with the game, but much smaller than the mayhem sets, So I scaled down and piece together from my mayhem city sets most likely around 15 mm scale basically streets and interior building floors. I mounted all of these different streets and buildings floors on 7 x 7 pieces of thin sheet metal. I tried to make the sets as interactive as possible so they linked up and made different combinations.

I've then made wall sections which I put on foam board there are inch and a half high and at the base of the foam board I hot glued rectangular quarter by quarter by 1 inch magnets , I didn't make all four walls is most of the buildings were on the perimeter of the game board so I would just make three walls, I also made a few other props to give the board a little three-dimensional flavor. The board set up very easily . Had many fun games playing zombies.

Though, as it happens, the rules for Zombicide are available - so no illegal exchange of PDFs is required.

Was just about to do the same! Glad they put the rules up for free. Best way short of a demo to figure out if a game is for you.
