Well, finally ordered a Malifaux warband, Resurrectionists.

Most likely they will serve double duty and appear in both Mordheim and Chaos in Carpathia as well as my SteamCraft game.

By the look of it my main problem is that I am going to want an experience system akin to those in Mordheim, Cutlass! and Chaos in Carpathia.

Not the game's fault, mind, but something that I really like in small scale fantasy skirmish games. I am likely to want this game to be something that it isn't. Long Mordheim campaigns have spoiled me.

And, I have just realized why WARMACHINE hasn't held my attention... it is small enough a scale that part of me wants an XP system. Good gravy....

Grump, I have been thinking of an XP system for Warmachine. It would involve using a generic Warcaster rather than one from the books and then buying new spells and abilities as you play. Could be a LOT of fun.

It's really much in the game format and how it's structured. Malifaux is a more of a storytelling setting, where the background is rather static and the events on the table won't effect the world much. It is also more clearly directed towards the tournament scene.

When Hell Dorado was under Asmodée their official campaigns DID have an impact on the setting and I very much liked how that worked.

For Mordheim... hm.. the problem can become that exp systems quickly distract the balance unless the player group is fairly constant and everyone plays more or less the same amount. There have been other attempts to create exp-based skirmish games, but Mordheim (along with Necromunda and Blood Bowl) seem to be the only ones still having a decent playerbase. It doesn't create enough sales though which is also the reason why they are Specialist Games instead of being actively supported.

It's really a matter of preference. I understand the joy in playing exp based skirmish games (as I did play a bit of Mordheim when it was released) but it takes time to create decent heroes from scratch. Then again, systems where there isn't much room left for customization (ie card-based games) do limit the options, but that also leaves more room for tactical decisions. I like how I can create a gang list within a couple of minutes, skip the paperwork and start playing. I end up getting splattered anyhow, so why bother with brilliant and detailed army lists?
