Sometimes shipping to Australasia works out far cheaper. E.g. Both Australia and NZ exports more by volume than they import. The means that some ships that come here empty and leave full - the cost of the full return trip being covered by the local exporters. As a result, ships coming to Australasia often carry cargo at extremely low rates because a) any business they get this way is pure profit (their costs/profit margin will be fully covered by the return leg), and b) other ships will happily take this cargo if they won't. |
