A couple pieces of advise I can give you. 1) Don't worry about the amount of time you will have for hobbies. Any of those options will probably leave you with more time for hobbies then you expect. 2) Depending on the size of university, in my experience a big college is what you make it. So your brother's experience may not be yours. 3) Think about what you plan on doing AFTER your post-secondary education, and the chances you have to get in. For example your Circus school. Think about what the average job for graduates from there is. (average not top) and how long the job expencenty is. If you only can work 10 years, the average had better be much better then any office job as you will have to live on that for a long time (or find another job with a worn out body) 4) Think about what options you have if your first choice doesn't pan out right away (or ever). Do you have related fields your school will equip you for? Are you willing to work at a much less glamorus job for years while you search for your big break? And finally, nobody else is ever going to be able to tell you what YOU should do. But they may have good reasons you may not have though of. If your parents don't like the option you are leaning to ask for reasons why. They may be considering something that you aren't. Take their reasoning into consideration. |

Thanks for the advice everyone. The more I consider it, the more I think National Circus School is the right choice. To answer ScrubKai's question, circus performers are actually paid a lot and although you can't perform on stage forever, once you retire from doing your act (normally between 40-50 years of age) you can go into coaching, directing, rigging, etc. So it would essentially be about a 20 year career with many options afterwards. |

I can honestly say that I have never knowingly met someone with a degree in circus arts. You would definitely stand out on a resume for some other job. My advice is to make sure to not close doors for yourself later. Athletes have a tough and stringent life and a career can end in a split second. Make sure you think about alternative options and have them in your back pocket. |
