Hi, I'm new here and I'm looking to create and use some WorldWorks stuff for our 4E campaign. I'm not the DM, but I figure if the group works together to build a basic stock of props the DM can then use them to populate our encounters. So my basic question is this: To what extent do you use the WW elements in your games? Do you create whole set pieces like those in the promotional images, or do you use the various props on top of some other kind of map? Something in between? Just looking for ideas and experiences. I built an Inn in order to get used to the process, just something that had a goal to keep me building, now I'm ready to move on to more useful elements like those in the Hinterlands set. -- Francis |

How I incorporate it is based on the amount of time I have. Sometimes I use the maps that come with the modules, sometimes I use floor-plan only WWG stuff with only a few 3D components (stairs, doors). When time and re-use of old stuff allows, I try to deliver a WWG-only setup. There are times where I don't quite finish it, and I'll say something like, "Imagine some more trees and stuff over here..." I mean timewise - "I just don't have the time/energy to cut that much foam core and whatnot. " |

One build that worked well for me on a small scale was a battle arena. I crammed the ramp, two moving staircases, SIX lamp-posts (movable/three controled by players, three by DM)(random 1d4 intervals), and levels/platforms for high ground. Toss in monsters, or tag team champs and off you go.This covered a 5x5 tile layout. Not huge but allowed players tp get the effect of the terrain in combat. This complamented a much larger build but we keep going back to that area. Hope you find something that fits, I keep adding layouts for new areas little by little and I think you will find alot of fun in small encounter sets as well. One street at a time. (This week I'm converting my set for a roof top chase with some dead ends) Small can rock. Get used to rethinking your game if you start this! |

I'd throw in an extra recommendation for props (from sets like VillageWorks - still my most used set, even with all the more recent goodness). It only takes one or two props to make a scene look lived-in/realistic - without them scenes look staged. And it is surprising the tactical uses players can find for props. Props I've got the most use out of have been: For exteriors: - cart (VillageWorks) - hovel/stone hut (VW) - well (VW again) - crates (VW yet again) - ruined walls (Camp/portal) - trees (Hinterlands) For interiors, a couple of chairs (Pubs&Inns) , a table (P&I), beds (P&I), and for wealthy locations a bookcase (Castles&Keeps) and a desk or nicer table (C&K). Even having just one of each of these would give you enough to transform just about any scene. |
