I've been fairly quiet here for a few months and haven't had time to build anything WWG, not even the last few kits I bought. The reason is simply that I've been extraordinarily busy with work, my brand new band and planning that's being held on the last weekend in July. Apart from doing all the writing, most of the design work and web stuff, I've also been working on an overly ambitious one-off game for the con. Back in December, I ran into the convention general on the street and he mentioned that he wanted some space combat type game for the convention and since I'd run the one-off zombie game at the last con, would I be interested in putting something together. I immediately suggested Wormhole or something based on it, but...he had far greater ambitions and I was fool enough to not only listen, but agree that his idea had some merit. He wanted something he described as Eve Online as a board game, something that could be ongoing like an MMO throughout the convention. Well, here we are, six months later and Marketeer (originally called Persistent Space) is nearing a beta test stage. The game is played by up to five players at a time (with a queue system) for a total of 66 hours straight. There's at least one game master (called Galactic Government) there at a time and a potential total of 45 players. The playfield is a 3x3 meter large playfield with 8 sectors - imagine a tic tac toe board with the middle taken out and the game master occupying the middle square, sourrounded by the game board. We'll be using Rocket Men ships (I have literally hundreds of them) as player markers and all aspects of the game are card-based. Players move around the board, harvesting items in space, fighting with each other, upgrading their ships, building bases and trading on the Galactic Market. Each player belongs to a corporation with a maximum of three members and every other hour, their standing on the market is tallied up and shown on a big board. Each corporation has a logo which contains two colors, and the colors indicate which two fields they're active in, giving advantages and disadvantages during play. You can see some dummy cards and the company logos . As you can see, the cards have a wealth of information on them. When harvested, only the commodity name and value are counted (the gray field top right). As they are traded, they can be bought as ship upgrades/character enhancements/battle cards. Each player has a ship display where cards are placed depending on how you want to use them. So far, in its untested stage it seems to give quite a lot of tactical depth with some fairly simple rules. So, why am I telling you all this? Well, since so many of you here are experienced gamers, I wonder if anyone would like to look over the rules and cards as they reach completion within the next few days. We're doing our first test game the weekend after next, and it would be great if I could catch any obvious loop holes, errors or dumb design decisions before then, since it'll be the only chance for me to give it a solid test before it goes live. Admittedly, we've said that the games masters (there'll be 5-7 of us) can change the rules to close any loop holes or exploits as the game goes along, but we don't want to piss off the smarter players too much unless absolutely necessary. So, if you have the time, energy and goodwill to examine this hare-brained scheme and tell me where it falls down, please post something in this thread and I'll send you a link to downloadables as soon as it's all completed (probably sometime this weekend). Thanks in advance. |

Sounds like an interesting idea, I am not familiar with Eve Online (know about what it is but that is all) but the idea of a MASSIVE campaign like this is the kind of thing I enjoy. I'd be willing to look at what you have but you may be better served by some of the other forum members since school is officially out as of today (single parent). Richard |

Sounds like an interesting project, and I must say I really like the logos. Like all good logos, they should enlarge well and be instantly recognizable from a good distance away. I was going to offer my services as proofreader, but I think I might be of limited value if the copy is all going to be in Swedish... |

Links have gone out, and I realize that it's a lot of info to take in in one sitting, but I really look forward to hearing what you guys have to say. |

I realize I keep bumping this thread myself, and I'm sorry about that, but just quickly; We've had a test game this weekend, and it worked surprisingly well, and what didn't work has been adjusted. New rules will be finished by the end of this week, if anyone's still interested. Big thanks to all who offered to look it over, but don't worry if you haven't had time (I certainly know what that's like). I think this may just work out really well, though. I'll post a report in early August if anyone cares. |
