I can highly recommend those can openers that cut sideways, leaving no sharp edges. (e.g. the , and I've seen other makes around). We were given one of these a few years ago and we use it on tear-top cans, as well as normal cans. I gave one to my parents a couple of years ago, and they were so delighted with it they have been giving them as gifts to all their friends since. |

I just grabbed one of those at a garage sale, cool tool. How do they hold up? I find most can openers fail fairly quickly. |

LD, if you are referring to the WMF can opener, we've had ours for about five years and it seems as good as new. ![]() |

The downside of those can openers is that is is difficult to drain things in the can. I don't drain most things I open, so this is fine for me. |

Talae tell me you don't fridge the food in the can?!? Just remember that food spoils faster when in contact with metals - foil, food cans. Lord Abaddon of Wormwood |

I have one of those side can openers but had never tried it on the pullback cans ... until just after reading the post about it. Works great!!! Now I am totally prepared to meet the challenge of any can in the pantry. After the electric sissors (next month), I'm going to tackle 'packaging'. I darn near wasn't able to get a Seagate USB drive out of the plastic vacumn package when it arrived. I used sissors (which hurt and didn't get far), then moved on to a steak knife (still very difficult ... almost cut myself), and finally had to ask my brother-in-law if he could come over and get it out. At least Amazon.com has started to encourage some companies to use user-friendly packaging. So I have become a loyal fan of theirs. |

I tried my side opener on a pull tab can and it didn't work. The pull can has a rim thats like 3 times higher up than the can opener cuts. |
