I thought it might be of interest to those following the WotC vs. PDF piracy battle that according to my sources a full PDF (scanned) of their latest 4e book Arcane power hit the pirate networks a few days ago. That means that WotC cut off a highly-profitable revenue stream for themselves and pissed off a bunch of loyal customers to buy themselves about a week. That's some GOOD pirate-busting there, guys. |

I think WOTC does enough tangible business to comfortably experiment with dumping PDF's. Not many can afford to take that risk but if anyone can its them. In any case, I give them a year going cold turkey. If they don't bring PDF's back to the market then you'll know that it was more profitable to cut off that line of distribution. The proof will be "in the pudding" as they say. |

My thought is that they're pulling out the only legitimate way to sell the older versions of the product. They're not printing anything prior to 4E yet people still want to buy the older products. Make them available as PDFs and they still have a revenue stream. There's also a disturbing correlation between the popularity of the Kindle and their decision to pull the PDF versions of their products. Anyone else see this connection? |

Wick is a numbskull on a few levels, but what he fails to realize about "sharing books" is that we used to do that until we could get our own copy. People who pirate this stuff generally don't buy the product afterwards. I could write an entire essay on this but suffice it to say, he doesn't really know what he's talking about and he hasn't in quite a while. |

How many of us only got started in tabletop gaming by borrowing someone else's rules until we were hooked? The debate WotC have started is focussed on the wrong stuff. WotC (and Wick) seem to have forgotten about supporting how we (their customers) operate, and instead seem to be saying we shouldn't operate the way we do. For pity's sake, we're the customers! We are the ones with the money they want. What happened to the No.1 rule of successful business: Customers first? We are not wrong for operating the way we do. And the companies that accept that and find ways to support us are the ones that will be successful. If that includes groups where one or two people provide the materials for the game, so be it. (What's more, one of WotC's biggest problems with D&D is attracting new blood to the game. Hardly surprising given, amongst other things, how much harder it is to get started in these days! At least when I started you didn't have to own and be familiar with a host of rule books just to keep up with more experienced players.) In very healthy comparison we have Denny and the crew at WWG. Not only do they create products that are practical and affordable for tabletop gaming (as well as looking great), they also actively listen to what we want and find ways to incorporate these things into their products and service. Small surprise that, while I have stopped buying D&D products, I continue to actively support WWG, both through purchases and word of mouth. |
