Anyone remember Strategic Publications, Inc. games from the 1970's? They are hex map games. I was going through a closet a while back and found some I used to play. The games are: Tank Frigate Chariot 6th Fleet |

I sill have great chunks of my wargame collection. I started out with SPI and Avalon Hill-- first ones I remember playing were AH's Luftwaffe and Acquire, and SPI's Foxbat and Phantom... I was looking in a shipping box yesterday, and saw Gunslinger, Triplanetary, Imperium Romanum I, The rules for Swashbuckler, the second Ace of Aces book set, and Recon: the Challenge of Patrolling. Most of the game boxes are buried too deep to get into... Someday, when the PhD is finished, we'll have a house with an office, and shelves for everything that's boxed... |

Well, Bob, I'll join you on the front porch for a game of checkers. I'll even bring my own rocking chair. ![]() ![]() I also found an old Avalon Hill game called D-Day. What suprised me about the SPI games is that the 3x5 cards that I transcribed the tables to were still in the plastic boxes. I remember especially making and using them for the Frigate game. Even the cannon range overlay I made is still there. |

It was the original AH Starship Troopers that got me into gaming, back in '78 I believe (can't believe I still remember the date). From there I went to Luftwaffe, Richtofen's War, Submarine etc. I'd have to say I was more of an AH fan than an SPI fan, i just liked the mounted mapboards at the time. Of course, that was before I figured out how easy it was to use a sheet of perspex to cover paper maps; multiple uses, multiple games, it was a revelation. Now, for single map games I use a 24"x36" poster frame from Walmart, about $10 IIRC. PERFECT for the job. I'm lucky, when we moved into our new house my wife allowed me to take possession of the 'extension' at the back of the house to use for my game room - wall to wall bookcases, baby, filled with RPGs, board wargames (including the two I co-designed for The Gamers), boardgames, minis rules (plus a display case for my minis) - it's a temple of gaming ![]() |
