Post subject: | Dr Who: The Oxford Chronicles |
We dusted off the old Mayhem board yesterday for a Dr Who tabletop skirmish using the excellent free rules from My boy (10) and Highland_Piper opted to play the UNIT forces, while Hubby and HP’s son preferred to play the Daleks. Apparently blowing each other up is essential to this Father--Son bonding thing. The Dalek patrol set up in one corner and sent half their forces out to scout for anomalous time readings in the vicinity. UNIT deployed in the opposite corner, sending one squad through the alley into main street, while the bulk of their forces and the Doctor plus the heavy tank took commanding domination of a rear car park. Rose Tyler, played by my 7 year old daughter, dashed across Main Street and took a perfect sniper position on the restaurant balcony. Early exchanges of fire went in UNIT’s favour and most of the advance Daleks became slag. Then the Daleks advanced to within their firing range and the tables were turned. Much carnage in the human ranks, so UNIT opts for their most classic manoeuvre: “Fall Back!” The forces deployed in Main Street were, to a man, mown down. Although Rose Tyler, standing in the middle of the street to take a pot shot, didn’t even get a scratch. Elsewhere a couple of incredibly brave troopers crept to within scary distance of the Daleks to retrieve a sample of the slag which was UNIT’s victory objective. They survived the encounter and were successfully retreating to assured victory when they fell prey to the now notorious “friendly fire” incident. A certain bucky tank commander (who may prefer to remain anonymous) decided to take out the nearest Dalek. As the dice left his hand he belatedly remembered it was an area effect. He successfully wiped out the Dalek. And all his own most heroic troops: The rest of the game was a scramble for UNIT to retrieve the slag and get back to their corner before the Daleks wiped them all out. Despite a strong extermination push at the end UNIT managed to get the slag and the Doctor back to the TARDIS, and even Rose scampered back to join them in time. End result: a narrow victory for the humans over the Daleks. |

After a break for refreshment and a lengthy walk, we replayed the game, this time with Highland Piper & Son as UNIT troops and my Hubby & Son as Daleks. In Version 2 the tank deployed onto Main St and quickly took out the first rank of Daleks. This time the Daleks closed in at top speed and were able to return fire much earlier. They completely overran the troops down the side road causing a classic ‘brown trousers’ moment: Improbably, two of those troopers survived. On main street the rest of UNIT (And Rose, who stayed with them this time) opened fire and managed a respectable number of hits. Alas, every single one pinged harmlessly off the Dalekanium armour. Down the side street a Dalek patrol closed in on the Doctor and his few guards. The following round the heavy Dalek stunned the Doctor. The Doctor was down! The final few rounds were an undignified melee retreat as UNIT soldiers pulled the Doctor back to his TARDIS and yelled for Rose to unlock the door. She ran in to unlock the TARDIS and was less than thrilled when the soldiers pulled the Doctor inside, pulled their Dalekanium sample inside, and then closed the door against the Daleks, leaving her on the outside. The TARDIS dematerialised, abandoning Rose in the middle of a Dalek patrol which felt strangely compelled to take her prisoner. We finished the game and decided it was a score draw: UNIT had their Dalekanium and the Daleks had Rose. We also decided that the dice are openly and overtly biased in favour of the sons. Said offspring declared that they had enjoyed themselves, so parents are counting this as a victory for traditional tabletop gaming. I hope we can get together another weekend to play out the rescue of Rose. |

Just quickly, I have to say that that was a great battle report! You tabletop layout always looks impressive and I like the billboard signs. Was there a TARDIS on the table... I mean an actual build? Just simply great. Lord Abaddon of Wormwood |

Yeah ok so I forgot about the Blast Radius. But it was because of the fun and excitement of the game!! I won't re post a battle report but I did do a quick write up at Dungeon Crawlers but combining both games into one. The game was fun! I enjoyed it a lot and I'm planning the next game using Chunky Gothic for the Doctor to retrieve Rose from the Daleks! That is a Lord_Abbadon but I could not find where to order it and what scale it was. I'm going to have to get some of the Doctor Who miniatures now. The great part is being a Time Traveler you can use many of the historical miniatures out there and every World Works Game scenery line works for this one game!! |

Excellent battle report and your terrain still looks great ![]() Where did you get those Daleks though? I looked around the Dr. Who Miniatures game website but they don't have any miniatures there... though I did see a photo there of some nice Cybermen...? Arabin |

Glad to see am not the only one gaming Dr Who with WWk stuff.. With WWk scenery as has been said almost any Dr Who period can be done, although the availability of some of the figures can be 'interesting' I was part of the Armardacon team and we won best particpation game, using a set of home-made rule (simple and very fun) we even had a que of gamers wanting to play.. Safe to say First Light Retro-fit got used.. Not sure what will be done next year but am pretty certain its Dr Who related again.... |

That looks like a fun game! I've mentioned this elsewhere, but for those on a budget standees of various types of Dalek and Cybermen can be found for free at: Just go to the 'RPG stuff' section and scroll down. There's also a Tardis exterior. Two alternative Tardis's, the first eight Doctors, several companions and a host of aliens can be found at: |

Don't look at any other pages (for there will be spoilers) but several early Torchwood images are here: Just think big coat, braces and a long barreled revolver. In fact, he does often carry his gun holstered on his right hip. A bit of minor modification to his hair and gun, the addition of rank insignia and buttons to his coat, and this could do the job. |

Brown shoes with black trousers? *shiver* That guy has no fashion sense... lol. Thanks for the link. At least he should be easy to paint... dip him in a pot of black paint... repaint the shoes and face... and you are done. Arabin |
