Heh, I won't even pretend to defend that piece of tripe called Starship Troopers. The only good is to use it as a training film for folks who play either Imperial Guard or Tyranids - as examples of what not to do! The fact that there is a direct to video sequel just makes my skin crawl, sight unseen. And if the Vaseline was bad, a friend of mine had that happen with a tube of Ben Gay that her boyfriend had left on the sink.... The Auld Grump |
ST:TOS will always be my favorite. The cowboys in space approach was great
CCotD It was great when I first saw it. Now the film 'Galaxy Quest' (I think that is the title) makes me think back to that old STOS series and laugh. Starship Troopers wasn't a total waste ... I loved the boot camp scenes and recruiting ads. Thought those starships crashing into each other and blowing up was a great scene ... the military hardware was pretty good, forget the tactics. I would like to make some models from that film. Come on now, admit it, they wouldn't be that bad to use. Come to think of it, I've liked aeveral films that have flopped. 'The Postman', 'Waterworld' ... I am definitely making a model set from that movie. Wouldn't it be nice to bungy jump your lead weighted standees??? LOL!!! Endless possibilities ........ |

I saw ST at the cinema when it came out. Very silly. About the only thing I can remember was that it was an 18 certificate at the cinema and a 15 when it dragged itself to viedo. Haven't seen the straight to video sequel tho my brother has and he said it was ok (please bear in mind that he thought Doom the movie was good). Nasty about the vasaline (tho I will admit I did have a little giggle to myself when I read it at first. Sorry). Mr Blackhammer |

Galaxy Quest is a great film... had me chuckling through most of it. As for Star Trek... noone is mentioning Star Trek: Enterprise with mister Quantum Leap himself. It started out really well, and my wife and I were gripped. Unfortunately, once they figured out how to use the teleporter and the holodeck, it was just the same as all the others. Lost all originality at that point. I had much higher hopes for it. Arabin |

So many things to comment on here. Starship Troopers: The movie hardly takes itself seriously, and neither should anyone watching it. Enjoy the over-the-top campy aspects of it for what they are, and it's decent entertainment. Try to take it seriously and contemplate things like tactics, or that one of the controls on a starship looks like the power switch off of a 286...well, it'll just give you a headache. Starship Troopers 2: Yes, it's as awful as they've said. Same bad tactics, same bad acting, but NONE of the not-taking-itself-seriously amusement value. The movie actually tries to take itself seriously, and that's its immediate downfall. I keep it around as a sci-fi terrain concept reference. Star Trek: There will never be any meaningful agreement about which series is better/worse than which. Everyone has their favorites, and they're all welcome to them. I have enjoyed large parts of all five of the series, and am bummed out that there hasn't been any new Star Trek for some time now (nor expected to be). Favorite things about Star Trek: Anything Q, episides that refer back to other episodes (or even whole series) in a cool way. One of my favorite episodes of DS9 was when they time-travelled back into the Trouble With Tribbles episode from TOS. Least favorite things about Star Trek: Ignoring established history/canon, wussification of formerly-terrifying foes. My greatest disapointment (well, aside from the opening credits) with Enterprise was completely chucking the very concept that Vulcans don't lie. My greatest disappointment with Voyager was how they portrayed the Borg. The first few Borg episodes of TNG portrayed them as a TERRIFYING opponent. Voyager reduced them to a semi-dangerous nuicense. |

Rofl, I had trouble wanting to comment much myself here, but I'm pretty much in the ballpark with Andorax (cept for ST2 which I havn't seen yet, mostly for lack of trying). As to Star Trek, heh, I'm fully in agreement with Andorax on anything Q, and that covers any series spinoff that the Q appeared in. As to the rest, it was episodes, or seasons for me, for all of the different series. Some of the original ST was really well done, and some was...well, just plain not. But in the end the same could be applied to any of the Star Trek spinnoffs from TNG to E. I liked the concept behind DS9 as the setting for adventures, even more so when they added the Defiant. Then again certain aspects of each series impressed, and others just bugged the crap outta me. There are some episodes I put up with once, if they appeared in reruns they didn't stay on my screen for more than the seconds it took me to find the remote when I realized what I was watching. I liked Star Trek and the ideas behind it in general, it was individual storylines that pulled me in, not any one setting of the series as a whole. In the end the same applies to most series for me. It is very rare that something like Firefly comes along and I enjoy every episode of a season. Even Babylon5 has many episodes I consider bad. Worst part is I was and still sorta am a big Hercules, Xena, Andromeda, Angel, Buffy type fan (only reason I didn't like Buffy was Sarah, not a big fan of hers). Why? Simple, it's campy and I love good camp when it is intended (ie; Starship troopers, even though it was insulting as all hell to the original story). |

Rofl, seen everything listed, from Red Dwarf to almost anything anime, I'm a big fan of scifi period. I don't always have to like the actors, storyline, props, etc...but it does help. My Televised favorites list would go something like this (not including anime which I find is getting to be far superior to most scifi storylines coming out of anywhere sadly). 1 Firefly 2 Babylon5 3 Red Dwarf 4 Space Above & Beyond 5 Farscape 6 Stargate & Atlantis 7 BSG new 8 Anything Startrek I liked 9 Andromeda 10 Earth 2 11 Varies, but everything after these pretty much falls into a broad category for me, and for some reason while I really like Dr. Who (especially the new series) I don't count it as one of my favorite scifi's even though I like it more than anything after #5 above. |

I did mean TV sci-fi when I asked if there was anything else good right now. But filmwise, Time Bandits rocks, but isn't really sci-fi. Red Dwarf used to be a lot of fun... good ole British humour. Stargate and SG: Atlantis both have their moments. I tend to watch SG: Atlantis, but not so much of the original. I really loved the return of Dr. Who and thought Chris Eccleston was perfect for being a modern Doctor. Unfortunately, for me, his replacements is rubbish. I just find him annoying, without the charm of Chris Eccleston. A lot of the TV shows mentioned are no longer running new episodes. I could be wrong but of the ones currently running (not re-runs) only the following are still new: - BSG - Stargate Atlantis (Stargate just finished for good I believe) - Dr. Who - Possibly some of the Star Trek stuff?
