So how many injuries have you sustained in the building of your models? I removed the tip of my left middle finger the other night with a brand new xacto blade. My fault, got distracted while cutting and failed to notice the position of my finger. One trip to emergency later and my finger is all wrapped up, no stiches, no pain meds, just thanks for stopping by. Gonna be a couple of weeks before I can resume this new found hobby. So tell me about your best and worst injuries. and how long you were unable to do any builds. |

Wow: Well, condolences (on your finger) and greetings to the boards Jeff! Stick with the hobby, it's definitely worth a few bumps and bruises along the way. As far as personal stories go, mine are all related to glue, super glue, and lots of stuck fingers and skin removal. I'm sure others will have much better stories. |

The trick is to always have some spare floor tiles from your latest build laying nearby... that way if you start bleeding, you can put the blood to good use as splatters across the tile... while calling for someone to take you to the emergency room of course 
Sorry to hear about your injury, but while waiting for that to heal, you can plan your builds, or print new pages. There is always something to be done

I guess I'm more paranoid than most, I check, then recheck where any possible extremedies might be in the way. I have only, up to this typing, only received a papercut. Painful, but not bloodworthy. I guess It's the old adage "measure twice, cut once" and I want to make sure the cut once is a non-emergency room event. When I was a teenager at a friends house, before all the nifty safety devices they put on tools now, my friend was using his dads table saw. I was helping hold the wood. It started to kick back and instead of stoping and repositioning he jammed the wood into the blade, I reached for the off switch so I could explain what he was doing wrong when he grabbed the wood, through the saw blade. Took his hand in half, right from the V of the thumb hand all the way across. Guess he thought that the saw only cut wood. Ever since then (and 4 showers after wards to get all the blood off me, it sprays in an arc) I have the most paranoid person in the world about cutting myself. So I am, at the moment, injury free. *shiver* I'm taking a woodworking evening class right now and I get to hear lots of stories like that about injuries from the table saw, and a fair few from joiners as well. It's is scary how a split second of inattention on one of those power tools can cause incredible, lasting damage. I carry the lessons learned there back to my hobby table, so when I find my attention drifting, I make myself stop and put away the blade. A common story with table saws is trying to remove the piece after is is fully cut, but not fully past the blade of the saw... which can easily cause either a jam or fling the piece of wood across the room. The common reaction when the piece of wood starts to fly is to reach for it... which of course puts either your hand or your arm into the blade. Scary stuff. Arabin |

yup table saw. I grew up hearing the story of how my father was teaching a shop class when he was a young man. From what I have been told, he was teaching how a table saw could bind and throw the scrap, very dangerous. So he told the kids to stand back and he was going to cause the saw to bind, thereby throwing the scrap to illustrate. One of the kids decided he wouldnt listen and instead of letting him get his face smashed in. My father tried to hold it for the second it took to push the kid out of the way and. ZIP! His right fingers are all now the length of his pinky, straight across. Before you ask, you can't sew hamburger back on. As for me, Ive stabbed myself in the hands with exactos, shaved fingertips off, split a fingernail and so on. Comes with the profession, architecture in univeristy requires mucho model building, mat making, paper wood cutting and other junk. |

I was using an engraving bit as a drill in my Dremel and it slipped (imagine that, what with this horrible misuse!) and i took a lead-caked engraving bit through the better part of my left thumb... it wasn't so bad, but in later with a magnifying glass and an Xacto plade looking for any lead bits left, that wasn't much fun at all. Took me almost a half-hour to fish all those little slivers out. |

I think we have all suffered many, many, many cuts from knives, bleeding from drill bits slipping from the miniature and we try and add pinning to ams, feet etc. I've seen much worse at work though. Like the veteran engineer in my previous company who kept refusing to use safety glasses in the workshop until one day he was using a pillar drill to put a hole in a metal plate, the drill produced a very long chip which then flew off into his eye, causing all the gel/liquid stuff inside to leak out and the 'deflated' eyeball to slip out from the eye socket  ............... looked like a gruesome 'eye-pendulum'
Never heard a grown man scream like that. Sick thing was that I was his manager and first aider at the time, and had to try and calm him down whilst applying a bandage to the wound while waiting for the company car to come over and take him to the hospital. He wore safety glasses every day after that

Forget about blades and that ! the real pain is a cut with the paper... damm !! I'm the only one that belives that is one of the most painful experiences in the world... they cut deep and bleed like hell - Show me a blade and I will stand... show me an edge paper and I run like Hell !! That's my moto...

Nice wound, also nice to know I'm not the only one to stick up scary looking pics  . I have to admit, I am finding it very hard to do any modelling even after nearly a month and a half of healing on my thumb. There is no more open wound, but the tip is still sensitive to pressure, like it hasn't completely reattached itself to the tip of the bone. Doing actual cardstock builds is not that bad, have built a few more props, it's the thicker matboard stuff that requires more pressure that I'm having more difficulty with. I can still do short bouts for now, and it is getting better, I'm able to apply pressure for longer periods of time now so I suspect it's more along the lines of getting my thumb used to being used again. I hate it when I cause damage to my dominant hand, it makes things alot more complicated overall. Amusingly, even with my thumb mummified in bandages the first thing I did that night after the stitches were in and I got back from the hospital was eat with chopsticks with no difficulty. My skill there seems to have improved quite considerably.
Honestly though, I'm more afraid of using a knife atm due to my emotional state of mind but I'm finding that doing the modelling is alot like riding a bicycle, it's more pattern and memory than anything else, not really the smartest thing as I could hurt myself but I'm still always aware while I do have the knife in hand. |
