Don't get me wrong... I love The Sword, and Wolfmother still gets turned up whenever it comes on (which is every half-hour at this point... The ghost of Robert Plant-Past is either laughing, or turning over in his grave...)
...And now, we have the ridiculousness that is "Dragonforce", forcing Mesrs. Vai and Malmsteen to reconsider their hammer-on and tapping prowess (has anybody witnessed their (screen within screen) licks?)
The problem here is not whether this is merely ironic riffage tribute ( I think The Darkness beat THAT horse to death...) Now we have Metalocalypse, courtesy of Adult Swim, which, I hate to admit, is wonderful... I love to laugh at the un-laughable, and Metal is now a "Sacred Cow" worth the torment...
I guess what I'm wondering is how many closet "Hessians" populate the boards... My heart still bleeds Slayer, and my age questions where the "kids" are at now, but my blood still beats to Napalm Death and Carcass, and I will never forget my first coversation with Jo Bench at the Agora, questioning why Bolt Thrower went the route of GW early on (Realm of Chaos, etc...) (The IVth Crusade is still one of my favorites...)
Let me qualify: my love of metal is pretty much timeless; my disdain for GW is only about 12 years old...


I still like Rogue Trader, and I still like Highway To Hell, for what it's worth...

No, nobody "rocks" like Haydn... or I should qualify...I'm also the asshole that really likes Baroque (Music + Architecture...) ...Bach (of course), Handel. etc...

I'm more of a fan of the romantic era myself. I can't stand the sound of the harpsichord.

My tastes in music vary quite a bit. Generally if it's played on the radio I'm more than likely not the biggest fan of it, excluding the few bands that are actually good and somehow manage to make it on. I actually was just listening to Sonata Arctica earlier while packing, then some Mindless Self Indulgence to and from the movie theatre. Earlier than that I was listening to my favoritist Web Radio station Digital Gunfire, which plays Industrial, Synth Pop, and EBM. One of my favorite bands is actually a folk-ish band you may or may not have heard of called Iron & Wine. Like I said, varied. I'm only 22 so I'm not really into 80's metal, or much other music from the 80's for that matter. I still shudder when I think about having to hear Styx while riding in my mother's car.

Good grief, I had to live through that stuff the first time 'round.

Hah! Saw Malmsteen on his first big tour opening for...wait for it...Ronnie James Dio!!!

Had a chance to see Metallica with Cliff Burton...Ozzy fell off the wagon and the Western tour leg was cancelled. I remember hearing Ride the Lightning for the first time and going whoooahhhhh. They only had 3 1/2 good albums in them, what a shame.

The internets has totally fractured and warped my taste in music. Lets here it for internet radio though, I'm geting sick of picking playlists.

Heh, I'm horrible with song names and bands, simply due to the fact that I have never had a favorite band in my life. I can hate every piece of work put out by a band yet like one song out of all they did just because it made me sit up and take notice, as well if I was asked to specify a genre of music I like I'd look at you like you were nuts. I like so many different types of music that I have never been able to specify one genre as a personal favorite, better to have someone ask me what songs I like and hope I know the name of them .

On topic, I've always liked orchestral rock, especially if it's done right, though I have no specific names as I pointed out above, it would take me several searches to find the names of songs I liked for a post like this, but I am glad to see some bands carrying on the traditions of old school rock, it was one genre that came out with a large portion of the music styles I liked. Stopped liking Metalica after they became mainstream again, they just didn't even sound like they were trying. AC/DC is another band I liked, though not all of what they produced.

I've been cursed with perfect pitch and the ability to hear a song once and not only sing the musical tune perfectly, as well as pick up on the words within 2-3 listenings of the song in a row, but as well to play out the basic melody on certain instruments (primarily the piano) after hearing it only once or twice. Problem is this always interfered with my ability to learn how to read music so I never progressed very far musically as I never had the proper teacher to take advantage of my musical talents. A talent my mother discovered after my first day home from kindergarten when she found me playing the organ in the front room of our house after hearing chariots of fire pre-programmed on a fellow students new keyboard he had brought to show off. I had never touched the organ before but played the tune as if I had known it for years, was one hell of a shock to my mom, who regrets she never had the ability to further this ability in me . Amusingly, for those of you who have heard my voice on the radio show broadcast recordings, or have chatted with me online I have a much better singing voice, I just don't express when talking the same way I do while singing as one is communication the other is direct from the soul .

I know its been mentioned before, but if anyone wants to sample a band and others like them, just punch their name into . Basically every band I've heard of is on here along with a bunch I never have.

Old school metal is the life blood.

All this talk of Dragonforce and not one word about the mighty Rhapsody... shame...
