PCI-E isn't a requirement...yet. You can still get by with just a graphic card replacement. Like Monkeyboy said, best AGP right now is the 7800GS, HOWEVER, their are some decent last gen cards to be had. Such as Denny said, the X800 or 850 can be had for under $250US if you know where to look. Currently I run a 6800 vanilla with an Athlon XP 2500+ (OC to 3200+) and a Gig of RAM and still consider myself a hardcore gamer...just one with a budget. I wouldn't replace your mobo just yet. |

Also, for the same price as a 7800GS you could get a decent PCI-E motherboard and a 6800 GS, which would outperform the 7800GS. |

Kane I was trying to avoid replacing the CPU, mainly if I do that I will get a new box too (very loud fan + another loud fan with the graphic card). And then we are really looking at a new computer really... I'm trying to be good ![]() ![]() ![]() Lord Abaddon of Wormwood |

Ah sorry, forgot with a P4 you could technically just upgrade the mobo to something with PCI-E support...like I said, I've got an AMD XP and pretty much have to get a new processor and mobo if I want PCI-E. |

If thats in Australian Dollars, its not horrible, but not great. If that IS in American Dollars, he's ripping you off royally. On second thought... what that card is going for through online retailers in the US. I could buy one and ship it to you for FAR less than he's asking. |

Even with the 7800 GS, that is a VERY high price. The most I would pay for one is $350US. is what those are going for from online US distributors. As far as their not being many options for AGP, sad but true. ATI hasn't (to my knowledge) made an AGP version of their newest cards this generation. That 7800 GS may well be the last high end video card we see for it. The 6xxx series had a decent amount of options, however. AGP is effectively dying out. |

So did my slacked jawed sales person only give me one set of options or would I have to do MB up grades for PCI-Xpress? AAnd then will the PCI-Xpress card be a sexier thing or just a new way of doing it all again? Damn too confusing I might take you up on the offer, Kane, to grab a card and redirect it to the South. Thanks CCotD for the info and link, this whole mindless killing and slaying is getting harder and harder every day, bloody cards. Lord Abaddon of Wormwood |

Yeah, chances are if you have AGP you do NOT have PCI-E (PCI-X I am told is actually something else...not sure the verocity of that statement though). It is a very rare mobo that has both AGP and PCI-E. That said, PCI-E are really not a whole lot faster with equivalent cards. A little, but not more than 10%. Either way, if you dont want to have to upgrade your mobo, AGP is what your stuck with. Chriton makes some great points as well as far as performance/price goes. |

This may sound stupid, but I have found if my system locks so hard it appears it is off, but really is not. Unplug it from the wall and then hit the power switch to clear the resistors, then plug it back it and then turn it on again. I had to do that trick for an old POS I had for about a year. Finally got so tired of it I threw it out, new box, no more issues ![]() CCotD' |
