Well, as I mentioned I finally broke down and bought Bits of Mayhem a week or so ago. Today I started sorting through it, thinking of how to use it when I came to a realization - I currently have no use for most of what is in the set. I can either say 'well, I just wasted my money' and move on, or I can say 'well, it has been over a year since I started working on a new setting/campaign anyway'. Sooo....
Well, it has been over a year since I started working on a new setting/campaign anyway, so I might as well see what I can come up with. Some of the ideas that I am mulling over for the game follow:
1.) The supernatural has always existed, but has hidden itself away from prying eyes... This is the basis for World of Darkness, and I think that it has been done quite enough.
2.) The supernatural has always existed, and it is over there. *Points at distant spot on a globe* An isolated pocket of magical power allows the supernatural to exist in one distant place.
3.) The supernatural has always existed, and it is over there. *Points at the bad side of town* The supernatural is segragated from the rest of society, but everyone knows that it is there.
4.) The supernatural has always existed, and it is over there, and there and there. *Points at several spots on the map* Isolated pockets of magic are centered around scattered places of power. (I use this in my Steampunk game.)
5.) My best friend Gus has been a vampire now for five years. It is okay, really, but you have to make allowances... The supernatural is integrated with the rest of society. The D20 Modern norm I think.
6.) The supernatural was gone for a while, but has come back with a vengeance. Some event has occured, and magic has returned all over the world. Shadowrun is an example. (I use this in my homebrew D&D 1600s setting as well.)
7.) The supernatural has returned there, and there, and there. *Points at several spots on the map* This has potential, and allows me to leave a bit of mystery to magic.
8.) The magic returned there *Points at a single place on the map* Used in Dragons of the Cuyahoga, this is the one that I am currently favoring - magic only works within a certain radius around a single point source.
The system used will likely be either Spycraft 2.0 or D20 Modern - magic using classes will only be available as advanced or expert classes.
The magic returning (if this is what I end up going with) will likely be tied to the lands of Faerie, with the gate or gates being the place(s) of power.
