I've been a long-time Chaosium fan, which means that I've long shook my head at their poor execution. But even so, I was unsure about the recent (last year) take-over of Chaosium by Moon Design. The recent article by GeekAndSundry: http://geekandsundry.com/cthulhu-compan ... 7271a1dc92 Makes it clear that I (and everyone who appreciates Chaosium) should be delighted with this recent move. It lays out what we suspected, that Chaosium was poorly managed, and that it was on the brink of failure. Based on the article, Greg Stafford, Sandy Petersen, and Moon Design should be applauded for what they did. It's an interesting cautionary tale about how not to run a Kickstarter (and a game business) Steve |

I received a box from the Kickstarter earlier this week. Like a lot of Kickstarters, by the time it arrives, I'm not sure what my original order was. But I am sure that they've gone well above and beyond in giving me a hard copy slipcase beasty with the rulebooks in. Memory tells me I started off with softcover rulebooks as part of my pledge. Although I don't often read them (in an off RPG phase at the moment), there have been regular updates for quite a while from them too. I've read stories that companies end up using one Kickstarter to pay off the last, due to errors and simple demand. It takes quite a bit of planning to not only know where the Kickstarter sweet spot is, but how much of that spot is sustainable. If you're not going to get the basics like shipping nailed down, then it's no wonder Elder Chaosium had so many issues. |
