Related to my other topic on ice sheets, I need some advice on painting snow-themed bases for miniatures. I use GW-style 25mm round bases. I glue sand to the top of the base, and then paint it a base brown color, give it a shading was, highlight in three layers, and finally add a little green flocking. Which is great for normal grpund. But does anyone have any suggestions on how to paint that sand to look like snow aside from plain white? Tips on shading colours, etc. would be appreciated. I really need to get these wrapped up today, or tomorrow morning at the latest, as we are playing Frostgrave tomorrow afternoon. |

The simplest thing to do would be to mix up a thin spray of glue and spray that over the base, then sprinkle Baking Soda over it, and allow it to dry. This will give you a great snowy effect, but you need to be aware that the baking soda does tend to yellow over time, losing the pure white look that you want from snow. It's more expensive to get some of the hobbyist material, but that gives you as good of a look starting out, and won't yellow the way that Baking Soda will. If you want to dirty it up a bit, you can mix a little ground earth or black/dark brown craft sand into the snow medium, which can give you a great look for snow that's fallen in a forest, where a significant amount of debris falls into it. Finally, drybrushing on a bluish white layer onto your figure can give it a nice frosted look, but I would not recommend that unless you're going for a more frozen look on the figure. |
