Slowly thinking about running a superhero type game - and have been reading super hero e-books by the half dozen.

Some are good - the Just Cause series, the Super Powereds series, and the Wearing the Cape series.

One started off pretty good, then became so awful that I have blotted the title from memory. Seriously, I cannot even remember the series title. Pretty sure that the test audience had the same reaction - the author's afterword was used to justify what happened in the book. (My creative writing teacher told me that if you have to justify the book then you did it wrong. My teacher was right.)

So... thinking about using the Wearing the Capes setting, since there is an RPG in the works already - though I may use Mutants & Masterminds, second edition as the system. Mostly using the series because I really like the name 'Heroes Without Borders'. :)

Series Title: The Task Force

Setting: Boston and Environs

PC Organization: Boston Police Department, Superhuman Task Force (may come up with abetter name with a backronym later - I like the idea of STFU... but will call it the SHTF for now). PCs are 9 to 5 super heroes, more accurately - third shift superheroes - budget problems and incident reports. Punch in, do your job, punch out. Overtime is limited.

PCs that had a superhero career before joining the SHTF are allowed to wear their blazon on their right pocket - their badge goes on the left.

Body armor is provided and supposedly mandatory - even if the hero does not need it. (often overlooked in practice). Communications and recording equipment is mandatory. Violent incidents will be reviewed. Violent incidents ending in serious injuries and/or fatalities will result in a minimum of two weeks of suspension - with pay if cleared by a board of review.

While a branch of the Boston Police Department, the SHTF has statewide powers and duties. (Massachusetts once had three such units... but with budget and corruption issues they got folded into the Boston SHTF - which has budgets from the federal government, the state government, and the municipal government... can you say paperwork in quadruplicate? I knew you could. :P )

NPCs so far:
Captain Joseph Adams - head of the SHTF - a speedster with 25 years of service, mostly flying a desk these days. Wishes he was in the field. (In the movie he would be played by the late Leslie Nielsen.)

Sergeant Laverne Watkins - a real powerhouse, and it never comes into play; she's the desk sergeant. (And she likes flying a desk. Even though she is capable of taking on the entire squad all by her lonesome. In a movie she would be played by Queen Latifa.)

Lieutenant James (Jon-Tom) Thomas - the third shift command of the SHTF. Looks tired, with five o'clock shadow all the time. The commander that the PCs will answer to under most circumstances. (No actor chosen yet.)

Dr. Benjamin Darling - M.E. seconded to the SHTF. Necromancer, but with limits. (Asking the corpses questions is okay. Turning the corpses into zombies, not okay. Nice guy, kind of weird, and a bit of a nerd - reads comic books. In a fight he is soft and squishy. In the movie would be played by Steven Wright.)

Dr. Hector Ramsey - chief medical examiner. Was secretly once a gunslinging vigilante codenamed Paladin. Descended from the bounty hunter and medical examiner of the same name and codename. ('Have Gun, Will Travel' reads the card of a man....) Most people know none of his history - as he puts it 'I'm older and fatter these days'. (Played by Richard Boone of course. Purely because I loved the show Hec Ramsey - a kind of sequel to Have Gun, Will Travel. I actually liked it better than I did the original.) Still carries a gun, even on duty, and can still draw faster than pretty much anybody. Trust me, that will come into play.

Lt. Baxter Powers - Boston Fire Department arson investigation squad leader. Pyrokinetic and pyromantic powers. (Pyrokenisis is power over fire, pyromantic abilities are being able to ask the fire questions and expect answers. But the fire has to be continuous for the questions to be asked - a fire's memory only goes back to when it became a flame. So an arson that uses timed devices will not be remembered by the fire. Lt. Powers is played by Benedict Cumberbatch.)

Lucifer - Prince of Darkness, Ruler of Hell. Retired. Living in a brownstone in Boston that he owns, working as a PI (because he wants to 'live the cliche'). Does not want to get back into the game. Heaven and Hell can both go hang, he is busy here. (Played by Morgan Freeman.) May go away if I cannot make his plot work. It should be questionable whether he really is the Devil, or just a superhuman with related delusions. He is not going to be running around perpetrating evil, but has enough power to level the city of Boston and surrounding towns. Severely limits his power use. First hint should be when he gets shot - not sure if I will borrow the coincidences from The Omen or just have the bullet flare, melt, and disappear before it reaches him. I think that I may name him C. S. L. Wormwood. He will certainly have a law degree.... His agency is Screwtape Investigations.

One out of Boston location will be Clam Harbour, Massachusetts - a town formerly named Innsmouth.... The PCs will find the old town sign in the basement of the town hall - the town was reincorporated in 1938 with the new name. They provided the US Navy with frogmen during WWII.

A compromise between the Deep Ones and the US Navy was reached following the incidents of The Shadow Over Innsmouth. The Navy never did get around to informing the US government - and the files were lost when the old Boston Naval Shipyard was closed down in the seventies. (Ironically, they were not lost deliberately - just badly stored. Neither side thought that they were doing anything wrong.)

There will also be problems in the old village of Dunwich - strangely enough the walls between worlds are weaker there.... Unlike Innsmouth, there is no compromise there.

Thoughts?

The Auld Grump, it's been percolating for a few months....

*EDIT* Damn, that was a long post....

How about Steve Buscemi for Lieutenant James (Jon-Tom) Thomas.
Or John Turturo?

Buscemi-based would be more abusive and dark; Turturo-based would be jumpier...

Sounds great. I'm jealous that you have a group of players that will (might?) follow a plotline, or do some investigation.

My players don't look into things.

Something like this:
Me: "You come on a man, covered in fresh blood holding a ceremonial dagger, at his feet is a corpse of a man. It looks like he has been dead for years or mummified. Dried, dead, dessicated."
Them: "Oh, wow. Um, we ask him who killed the guy."
Me: "He answers slowly, like he's coming out of a daze, 'I'm not sure'"
Them: "Ok, that guy doesn't know anything. Is there anyone else around we can talk to..."

Seriously. If I get two questions out of them in a situation like this, I'm doing well. Never mind the idea that people lie or misdirect or...

Have lots of fun!

Post subject:  Re: Superhero Gaming....

As often happens I am working on the scenarios based around scenes - but not at all in the order that they are likely to be used. :P

One scene is the funeral for Jon-Tom -and the introduction of a flame based villain called Pyre. (Yeah - he is attacking the funeral, starting with a blast at the coffin and the police pall bearers.)

He wants to take down as many of the SHTF as he can, then run away.

If he gets away then he will become a recurring villain. If he gets caught... he would rather die than go back to prison - and there is a reason that he calls himself Pyre.

Taking him alive will be HARD. (It can happen, but is not likely.)

Another minor plot will be the release of another prisoner from prison - Badger, a brick type with the ability to travel through earth - who got out with time off for good behavior.

After release he will seek out the team... and tell them how sorry he is that Jon-Tom is dead - the Lieutenant used to visit him in prison, and he has no intention of ever having to go back. And that what happened at the funeral is just wrong.

Planning out twenty episodes (sessions) per season. Most will be self contained, with a few To Be Continued for the Bam! episodes. (The episodes in which The Main Plot is advanced.)

Well, crap.

I remembered the name of that series that I thought that I had driven out of my brain.

Charlotte Powers by Ben White - first book is fine, second book is okay, then it devolves into a crapsack universe and the entire series becomes a pile of suck.

Then he uses the afterword to justify his writing.

Just plain awful series, aside from that first book.

The Auld Grump, why, no... I didn't like the series, why do you ask?

Willow Taylor (creator of ) has introduced me to - watching it dubbed on Hulu.

Superheroes with branded marketing. No, really - the mech style warrior is sponsored by Bandai.... :)) Fun, but terrible animation... or maybe that is just Hulu.... (More likely both... there is a reason that I avoid most anime. Sometimes better plots, often better characters, almost always poor animation.)

She also led me to by the creator of Nodwick.

Finally nailed down Jon-Tom's power - autonomous simulacra.

Each simulacrum is independent, with Jon-Tom's memories to the point where it was created - and until a simulacrum discorporates Jon-Tom does not have access to the new memories, when he gets the simulacrum's new memories in a dump.

A simulacrum lasts for twenty-four hours. Which means that the simulacra that were created before Jon-Tom dies know that they are going to discorporate in X hours....

I read a novel for superhero 'research' - Jackrabbit... the book was awful - but knew that it was awful, and the writer had a lot of fun with it.

I wish that I had read it right after buying it - I got it for 99 cents, and I would be telling people to pick it up if that were still the case.

The book was dumb, but it was fun dumb. :P It got me to laugh out loud - which is pretty rare. The description of a ballet studio.... 'It never failed to astonish him just how stinky little ballerinas could be. No matter how hard he mopped the floor in the main dance studio, it still smelled like feet.'

I have only once been in a ballet studio - for the Pittsburgh ballet... I thought that it smelled like feet because, well, Pittsburgh....

In all, the book reminded me of the old Spiderman cartoon.

Post subject:  Re: Superhero Gaming....

A while ago I read a scifi book with a similar situation: Technology had advanced to where anyone (with a home machine) could create simulacra to go out and do stuff. The main character was a detective and used them to investigate multiple clues at once. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the book...

But the useful idea was there were different levels of Simulacra, each of which had a different color. They differed in their cognitive ability and lifespan. The more capable clones took longer to produce, so the detective needed to figure out how many of each he was likely to need the next day. Perhaps that's worth thinking about: the capability of the Simulacrum depends on the points spent on it.

In this book when simulacra reached end-of-life, the knowledge didn't automatically go back to the creator -- the clones needed to report back in. So in some points in the book his clue was to figure out what happened to the clone.

Hmmm, been a while... still working on this, slowly....

Added a few minor characters - Limestone Cowboy: advantages, stone form with increased armor, strength, and endurance. Disadvantages - being the kind of guy that thinks a name like Limestone Cowboy is clever. ('I call myself Limestone Cowboy because I don't want to be taken for granite!' :ymcowboy: )

The Evil Genius - tall, skinny, big head, goatee, wears a Narbonics Evil Tee. Not evil, at all. Does some consulting for the BPD, has a webcomic, and signed comics on his wall. Super intelligence, mind powers, minor speed boost, and gay. (And has called himself The Evil Genius since way before he developed super powers.) Is good enough at Starcraft that the Koreans consider him a challenge. Makes his living by day trading.

Innocent Bystander Man - you know, in cartoons, when the dynamite goes off and leaves the character's clothes in tatters, and his face blackened, with a surprised expression, but no actual damage? That's this guy's power, along with the amazing ability to be someplace where something goes *BOOM!* (And, for... reasons... if IBM is there then no one else is hurt by the explosion, either. Not a useless ability, but he really does not like being blown up. It just keeps happening.) He is going to be a running gag, since nobody knows about his power. (He's a stockbroker.)

The Demolitionist - Explosive blasts, force fields, and the ability to find the weak spots of anything and anybody... and is completely legit - has several contracts for Hollywood, and makes a very good living taken down buildings in crowded areas. Had is breakthrough while in the Rmy Corp of Engineers. Really knows what he is doing. (A bad guy will try to hire him. The Demolitionist will wear a wire.)

I may wait until Wearing the Cape comes out - pretty happy with that background.

Anyone have experience with the GUMSHOE system?

Turns out that they have a game for police superhero gaming, titled Mutant City Blues.

Looking over the PDF... it looks workable, but I am hoping for some experienced voices to give me their opinions....

Adding another character to the Lucifer plot - Lucifer's illegitimate son Professor Murden, a retired Oxford Don.

Murden's actual memories tell a very different story than the cover identity that he has created for himself, he woke up on the day The Event brought super powers into the world, in the shattered remains of an ancient oak tree.

Murden is a name based on a mispronunciation of the name that he remembers - Myrdden.

Ironically, magic using supers are called 'Merlin Types' in the setting....

Lucifer is actually happier with the way things have turned out than he would have been had Myrdden actually been the anti-Christ that he was intended to be.

Murden, for his part, dislikes and distrusts his father, for reasons born of bitter experience.

Sorry Grump but I have no experience with it. But, I did run my first DC Adventures game this weekend. For those not familiar with the game, it uses the Mutants and Masterminds 3rd Edition rules.

I have six players and I had hoped to start all of them together, but two couldn't make it because of work, damn those real life problems! Anyway, they are all part of a private detective agency and all of them wake up in the companies two SUVs, since I was missing two, they were in the one SUV while the other four were in the other one.

Upon waking they have no memory of what happened during the last week. So starts their first investigation! I've got an Obsidian Portal site set up for the game, so if anyone wants to keep up with the game, you can go to site.

I haven't posted my game notes for the first adventure but plan on doing that later today during my lunch break!

How does 3rd edition M&M compare to 2nd edition, in play?

I was not that impressed when I looked at 3e at Border's (back when there was a Border's) - it seemed to me that they had confused 'streamlining' with 'simplifying' or maybe even 'dumbing down', but that could just be my own bias kicking in.

Plus, 2nd edition had a good magic supplement.

Personally, outside of a few strange decisions (like the Impervious nerf) and a few rules quirks (the Bonus Only and stat rearrangement definitely doesn't gel well with what they did with 1e and 2e), I like it. It streamlines some of the ideas in a manner that makes some concepts significantly more accessible (such as a character based on the speed of a peregrine falcon) without overly simplifying everything.

The powers are built in much the same way that 1e powers were built in practice, with everything thematically being linked into 1-3 different power sets, with Alternate and Dynamic powers being used to add even more distinction to individual abilities. Most of the Feats are also ranked, giving you more of an effect the more of them you take. Other than that, it is really quite similar to 2e with some tweaks. All IMO, of course (and really, I'll take any edition of it for my supers RP. I think it strikes the best balance between complexity and flexibility I've seen in a system thus far).

Continuing to slowly, slowly grind away on this.

Finally named the Boston PD super-hero group -
Super Human Incident Field Team - which was almost, almost the Super Human Incident Team, but somebody noticed the acronym just before the stationary got printed.

The old-timers still joke about it.

The SHIFT acronym also allows me to have story arcs with titles like Night SHIFT, Late SHIFT, Graveyard SHIFT. (Remember - these are working heroes, with a union and everything. The SHIFT acronym works on multiple levels.)

Nailing it down to M&M 3e - I like 2e better, but availability is good.

I am now officially under pressure to run the silly thing. :)

The person that I was using as a sounding board told me to stop telling her all about it - that she has decided that she wants to play in it.

This whole thing started because she was annoyed that City of Heroes had been shut down....

Hmmm, next question is going to be...
What is good music for background and Intro? (I like to have music playing before the game as a 'theme song'....)

The theme from Superman is out - way too recognizable, ditto for Batman and The Flash....

Maybe something more... Police than Superhero?

The Auld Grump - one of the Not Bad Guys gets his own theme song for episodes that feature him - Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams... because Lucifer is a bit of a whiny git.... :P

Depending on the tone of the game, Poets of the Fall has a lot of stuff that could work very well as a theme song. "The Ultimate Fling", "War", and "Carnival of Rust", "Lift", or "Locking Up the Sun" can be quite good for a Supers game (I've actually used Carnival of Rust as inspiration for a 4-part adventure). Or, if they're playing the bad guys (or just going up against someone particularly nasty), there's always "The Happy Song" ('Cause, really, I'm a psycho...).

Aside from that, the MV for Carnival of Rust is really one of the most evocative music videos that I've seen:

[edit] Another one of theirs that I've used for inspiration in a Superhero game (single session adventure this time) is "Daze":

One of the better books that I read for inspiration for this campaign is - a story of a super villain turned hardboiled detective.

The second book of the series just came out - The Coconut Swindle.

Right now, Coconut Swindle is . The first book is likewise 99 cents, at the moment.

This series is the best example of superhero noir that I can name, and I highly recommend it. A very good take on the old pulp stories, with a superhero twist.
