They've just announced the release dates for 5th Edition D&D: I don't know if it's a good idea that they're staggering the releases of the core books. They did that with 3.0 and it provided an opportunity for 3rd parties to produce their own books to fill in those gaps. Plus, it irritated a lot of players and GMs 'cuz they had to wait for a few more months to actually be able to play the game fully. I also don't get why they're shying away from calling this 5th edition. Or anything about the edition in the name. History has shown that people want to have the latest and greatest of a product. Having an edition or version number on your product just enforces that it's the newest. The really interesting thing about this announcement is that WotC has outsourced their module creation to Kobold Press. It's about time that they realized that they don't have a knack for writing compelling adventures. |

A couple thoughts here. I'm wondering if they are thinking the starter set will have the rules, monsters and magic items to get people through the first few adventures while the core books come out. I also heard the reason they are staggering the releases is to allow for more time to edit each book as the 4E bulk release ended up with too many errors. Third, I'm wondering if this us going to be consistent that an outside company does modules, or if this is just while they are trying to get the new edition off the ground. Finally: I'll ask for Gump , anyone heard anything about a 3rd party license? |

I think one reason they staggered the release is to let people's wallets recharge. $50 each? Wow. I have not bought a hardcover RPG book in a few years, so I do not know the going rates. The 4-pack of random minis for $20 also seems high, but maybe it is just me. Also, is Forgotten Realms the default setting for 5E? |

Paizo's been selling the Pathfinder hardcovers with a list price of $40 thus far. Of course, very few people are actually paying that much for them. Still, a list price of $50 is kinda high. And $30 for a module seems high--though, of course, we don't know what level range that covers. If their entire story arc covers levels 1 - 18 or so with only 4 books, then it's not so expensive. If it's following Paizo's model of 6 books for the whole campaign/AP, then that's mighty pricey. I'm glad you mentioned the minis. I overlooked the details on them. I recall that WotC said publicly that they were going to release their minis with a non-random model. It's interesting that they've changed that and are actually still doing the random boosters. I thought Pathfinder minis were expensive at an average of $4.25 each. WotC's are going to cost $5.00 a piece at that list price. (not that I ever actually pay list prices if I'm buying boosters/cases) |

It'll be REALLY interesting to see how well 5th edition does. Will it win back enough of the folks who didn't jump on 4th edition? Will it even get enough of those who liked 4th edition to buy this new one? By all accounts, Pathfinder continues to gain fans. We'll see if WotC can win over enough of those folks. As a side note, a gaming friend of mine is an accountant by trade, and she has actually gone through the last several years of Hasbro's public financials. She said as much as people in the industry like to say that 4th edition hasn't been a success, D&D brings in WAY more money than any other product line Hasbro has. So, it can't really have been a failure financially. |

Ya I'm also interested in seeing how 5E and Pathfinder both do... Paizo has been releasing so much content that I'm starting to wonder when the bloat is going to get to people just like it did for many of the 4E fans when wizards did the same thing. Of course their current AP starting off less then stellar, and the next AP being totally not my taste may be making me think Pathfinder is closer to the end of life then it really is. |

I wouldn't disagree with you, Kai. I've been saying for some time that their approach to accessory books is shooting themselves in the foot a bit. Specifically, their emphasis on Archetypes over Prestige Classes. In 3.0/3.5, a single Prestige Class would take up 2-5 pages of a hardcover. One hardcover, thus, would have 10-12 of them in it. Archetypes, on the other hand, take up 1/4 to 1 page. As a result, you can find more than 50 of them in a single hardcover. (Complete Mage has 11 Prestige Classes, while Ultimate Magic has 56 Archetypes) With this approach, Paizo has actually crammed so many more options for characters into each book. And there's gotta be a point where they start to run out of ideas for new ones. One of my players just mentioned this weekend that he's noticed Paizo has been consistently adding a Prestige Class or two to almost every new book they've released in recent months. I think this is because they're running out of ideas for new Archetypes and they need quite a few of them to fill the same number of pages in a new book. They haven't been putting out as many hardcovers as WotC did in 3.5 or 4.0, but they're still producing multiple books per month. It's a delicate balancing act between running out of ideas and letting their fan base get bored with a lack of crunchy options. Maybe I'm misreading the situation. We'll see. |

I am skeptical, but leaning on the positive side (being overly optimistic as always). The price will hurt my chances of buying early and will definitely prevent me from buying two copies (one for me and one for my wife) unless I am 100% sold on the edition. As for minis, only some cool Eberron minis will get me to buy them over Reaper Bones (or Darklands, DeepWars, ShadowSea, Guild of Harmony, Stonehaven, Red Box, and a few others that I indulge in). |

Honestly now the more expensive PHB makes more sense. Hook them in for free, and offer "premium" option for those that want it.... If they are giving the core of the game away for free that gives me hope that the support for 3rd parties will be much better then with 4th. |

Well, the free stuff is a limited portion of the rules. It will only cover the fighter, wizard, rogue, and cleric and 4 of the core races. So, it's more of a teaser of the new rules and mechanics, I think, to get folks to take the plunge and purchase the full books. |

By that logic, though, nobody really needs to buy any Pathfinder books since all of the core material is available for free online through multiple websites. Yet, tons of us are still buying it. If 5th ed is good and feels like the D&D that people remember (and want) then they'll spend the money. |

"Free limited rules" means I will at least take a look at it. I do not expect it to excite me at this point. |

Not only those classes, but a specialist version of each as well. For $20, I'm getting the beginner box. Combine that with the more complete free PDF and its hard to go wrong even if I just read it and not actually play. They are marketing the books in such a way that the DMG and MM are ACTUALLY optional and just add rules options. Time will tell. |
