Post subject: | Looking for a Miniature Game to complement The Maiden |
Hey Guys, In between the various other projects I've been banging out, I'm still plugging away on The Maiden. I have a couple of other Age of Sail enthusiasts in the group, and we were thinking about building a fleet of them, in the 6-10 range, for a 28mm Naval Engagement. However, I can't find rules that will work with that scale of a model. Everything seems to be Wormhole Scale or Smaller. Anyone have any ideas? I'd even be open to adapting an RPG, though I don't know of any off the top of my head (Except maybe 7th Sea, which I'm not excited about) that would work well in a miniatures environment. You guys are awesome. ~J |

Flagship Games "Pirates." Or, if you want a challenge, "Heart of Oak" (The ship rules for Privateers and Gentlemen), they are sailing rules that also do gunnery. You ought to do stands, and sail around between table islands, if you're gaming with ships that big... |

I have to wonder, if you're using the whole Maiden, or rather several, for 28mm naval combat moving about the floor, what gymnasium you'll be using... Blue fabric sheets for the ocean surface? [EDIT - additional thought] Possibly use an upscaled version of the "Pirates" CCG little plastic sail ship rules for movement and ship vs ship combat? |

I did think about using an upscaled version of the CCG, but it doesn't include rules for models during boarding actions. This is really an entirely hypothetical exercise to be honest. I'd love to do this, and I know I have some people in my group crazy enough to do it. I have probably a 12' x 12' area to play this in, maybe a little less. That is why I'm looking for rules, I want to know what the recommended distances and such are. I firmly expect this to be more of a "Bombard the enemy 3-4 turns as you close, then grapple and board". We'll see how this works out. We'll see if I stay motivated enough to actually build more than 2 Maidens. I've seen multiple people say they spent somewhere between 24-40 hours on each one. I've got a ton of projects to finish, including enough terrain to fill out a 20 person Malifaux Tournament. The good news is that both of those rule sets are fairly cheap to purchase. I've got them book marked. I thank you guys for your time, I knew someone here would have some good ideas, you guys truly are kindred spirits. I feel like you're all as crazy as I am. ~J |

Forewarning: it may seem stressful while building the Maiden(s) - but you will love it when it all comes together... She will be a thing of beauty of which you'll always say, "I really did that? Oh, yeah!" And PICS ! (or it never happened) |

I actually like 7th Sea - pretty much the exact opposite of the games that I normally play. You may want to see if you can dig up a copy of Warhammer Historicals - Legends of the High Seas. It has full campaign rules, based on the system used in Mordheim. Lots of fun, and my highest recommendation. Unlike Cutlass it has rules for ship to ship combat. (And is, in my estimation, just a better game than Cutlass.) A fun, beer & pretzels style game is Privateers & Gentlemen is available at (And has the distinction of having been the system used in one of the all time worst convention games that I have ever played in.) I do really like 7th Sea, but it needs a 2nd edition. The new edition of Legend of the 5 Rings works so well, and 7th Sea is very clunky by contrast. But that doesn't mean it isn't awesome. I agree Grump, I've been looking for a copy of the Warhammer Historicals, but it's REALLY hard to find. They closed up shop in 2012, and eBay has them for $100. That's crazy. ~J |
