I just got an e-mail from an old player of mine - he wants me to write and run a scenario for the old Victory Games James Bond RPG from 1989. He was about ten years old when the game came out. I'm not even sure that I still have the books - if I do then they are buried deep in a box somewhere. This makes three old RPG that I have been asked to run in the past year (not counting Call of Cthulhu...). Ghostbusters (I have run about eight sessions over the past eight months...). Men in Black (had to buy it to run it... but you can still get it cheap). James Bond.... All three are from movies, two are comedy. And I saw a thread about running 1e AD&D games.... Just me, or is there a whole lot o' retro going on? The Auld Grump - what next? Teenagers from Outer Space? |

Whole lot of retro going on... Bought "Rules Cyclopedia" so I can run the old Box (80's edition) D&D modules and games. ~Will |

I think as games have added more complexity, they have robbed a certain amount of creative freedom. When I was running my D&D 4e game, it took a computer and a monthly access fee to scale encounters aporopriately. The idea of creating a new race or class was intimidating, to say the least. The 3.0/3.5 wasn't a whole lot easier. But I can doodle in a notebook at work and come up with good 1e material, and I haven't read the books in at least 20 years. Likewise for Classic Traveller (except that I read the books fairly frequently.) Anyways, I think that's why there is a big retro resurgence. The older games had less to them, and it not only made it easier to customize them, but it almost forced the issue on us. And after we pumped our creative juices onto handwritten notebook paper, we were far more satisfied than the current printout of numbers and colors allows. By the way, if anyone has an opinion of AD&D 1e clones, EDIT: added shameless self promotion. |

I don't think older games, as such, are that much en vogue. Sure, some people are into them. Other people play indie games (of which there's still quite a few), or some system of their own choice - WoD, Exalted, Rolemaster, Gurps, what have you. In other words, I doubt that the three games mentioned in the OP are data indicating a trend. |

If my group is any indication, it has to do with people taking a break from d20 and looking elsewhere. With old e-books popping up all the time it's easy to remember some of the old games again. So if nothing "indie" looks interesting, why not try that old system again? |

I asked at my FLGS and they said RPG sales are just slow. It may also be the season since people buy a lot of board games around XMas. I've recently stocked up on Pandemic, and Zombicide. Both are great since they are cooperative play which is a distinctly different way to view the person across the table from you. (The exact opposite is of course Diplomacy... curse that game.) sdavies2720 punkrabbit: I have mentioned Star Wars Edge Of The Empire.. I find it distinctly different. You do it on paper, and even create your own rules and stuff, the system encourages it. Once you get your head around the funky dice the game just flows. Grump: TMNT |

@UHF: I had the chance to play Edge of the Empire, and while it was a good game, I am thoroughly burned out on Star Wars after my extremely fun Star Wars Saga campaign that I ran a few years back. What I really want is AD&D 1st edition... |

Speaking of Indie games there are quite a few good ones with a lot of focus on story telling. Spirit of the Century ,Dogs in the Vineyard, Polaris. Some are even fairly good on the crunch side of things... Burning Wheel. Some games that keep the simple/spirit of the early games with a modern sensibility are systems like Savage Worlds. ~Will |
