So, who likes which 1eAD&D clones, and why? I am in the market and would like as many biased, opinionated rants on the subject that I can get.

Not really a 1e emulator, but Hackmaster 4e pulls on the 2e era of RPG mentality, and does some really innovative stuff with the system - like a dynamic initiative system that actually works! Other than that... The only two I've looked at have been Swords and Wizardry, and Dungeon Crawl Classics. Not really enough to suggest one over the other, however. |

I like Castles & Crusades. It takes what I like from 3rd ed. D&D, namely rolling to hit vs AC, and saving throws, removes what I don't like, feats and the overly complex combat, and combines it with 1st ed. character classes and advancement. You can get by with a players handbook and a monster book, but the Castle Keepers guide is very nice. |

I absolutely loved Hackmaster 4e. More complex than 1e, but is so much more a successor to D&D 2e than 3e ever was. |

My suggestion is not to use an emulator - find and play the actual game. The price for the old, almost indestructible, books can be pretty reasonable. I have a lot of happy memories tied up in that game.  The Auld grump |

As it turns out, I have been buying the originals off ebay for a while. I haven't paid more than $15 for a book yet

I like Swords and Wizardry for straight-up retroclone. And Crypts and Things is a great Sword & Sorcery version of S&W. For modified retroclones, I love the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. It hits me just right - super flavorful, streamlined rules in some places, the right kinds of tables (and lots of them) in others, cool class widgets - and did I mention dripping with flavor? I'm also a big fan of what Sine Nomine Publishing does, even if I don't use their systems. Their supplements are awesome. Red Tide is fantastic, for example. I backed their Spears of the Dawn kickstarter, and am backing their latest, Scarlet Heroes, which is a retroclone designed for 1 player/1 DM (thinking about this for my daughter). |
