Anyone noticed that Goole search is becoming less helpful and progressively more generic in what it returns? Whenever I do a search these days, Google returns a generic list that is more and more based on single words in the search rather than the combination that I'm searching for. Even though I use an anonymizer (StartPage.com) to get round Google's distorting filter bubble, the problem still persists. It gets still more frustrating when I add an extra word to refine a search and all Google sends back is the same set of results. Google seems to ignore extra criteria in the search, only paying attention if the added word is a popular search term. It's as though Google now treats searches as OR not AND, and selects the results based on the popularity of individual terms within the search. Even adding + to the start of each word in the search (which used to force Google to return only items that included the +'ed words) doesn't make the slightest difference. After years of providing the best search on the internet, Google is now failing as a search tool. Any recommendations for a good internet search engine? |

I've been finding google less and less reliable recently, too. It seems like they're going out of their way more to direct me to site that want to sell me stuff more than anything else. I don't know what else to use, though, since most of the better search engines from years ago went under or just decided to start using google to power theirs. |

Thus lending evidence that the Bean Counters have taken over from the Researchers. |

I read an article a little over a year ago that even though most people ignore it, Bing is actually a better search engine than Google. I still use Google, they haven't failed me yet. But if you're getting frustrated, Microsoft's offering might be worth a look. ~J |

If you put anything on the net in any capacity, just expect the U.S. government to check it out. |

The US government doesn't really concern me (even if its record of interpreting information and protecting individuals' rights has some recent and rather black marks on it - the system would have to go extremely askew for someone like me to end up on the wrong end of it.) What concerns me is the potential misuse of my own data (and meta data) to distort the information available to me, misrepresent me to others, or flood me with unwanted marketing. IN the digital world I'd much rather be able to see things and be treated as your average 'Joe', except where I choose to establish a more specific relationship. - That's why search privacy is important to me. |
