Beasts of War is dedicating a week to . So far there are a few descriptions of the armies in the basic game. Much better, in my estimation is the Demo game using the two player starter set. It gives a decent idea of how play goes (but the deployment was painful - all I could think was 'No! Don't put those there! ![]() And for folks with a Backstage Pass they have a tutorial on painting a Dark Elf , errr... I mean Twilight Kin Sorceress. (One of Mantic's better minis - I know somebody that is using the figure as her player character in a Second Darkness Pathfinder game. (All that I know about Second Darkness is that it involves Drow... I neither own nor have played Second Darkness.) The painting tutorial and the Demo game are the best parts, at least so far. So, how many folks have actually tried Kings of War? I have been getting in two or three games most weeks - Undead and Dwarfs. I have not yet played Orcs - and only fought against them a scant handful of times (repurposed GW Orcs at that - but my own Mantic Orcs have only seen play in Pathfinder.) The Ogres... are just plain nice figures - smaller (or at least thinner) than GW orcs, but nicely proportioned, with the Shooters being my favorite. The Auld Grump |

I have. I play regularly with my kids and switched from Warhammer to Kings of War last year. We'll never go back! |

I watched the video. Seems faster than Warhammer. Do the units come on movement trays? Do they always move that way? I've been enjoying skirmish level stuff lately (SoBH) and the video made movement sound more complicated than I care for. I've never seen anyone around here play it (Jacksonville is heavily mired in the Olde World). Thoughts? |

Faced a Basilean army for the first time - unfortunately, I was using my Dwarfs, so the Basilean's didn't get to use some of their special rules. The Basileans get a bonus against Evil armies - so next time I bring my Undead instead. He will face the wrath of my Spice Ghouls! (Which tells you how long ago I painted those miniatures, Scary isn't it? ![]() I won, more or less - Pillage scenario, but... I feel that it was more that he concentrated on trying to kill me, rather than the objectives. If he had gone after objectives... I'm playing dwarf infantry, while two of his units were mounted, and another could fly. If he had nabbed objectives then the best that I could have hoped for was a tie. I feel... oddly robbed. Like I didn't win, I just happened to be there when he lost. *** That said - it looks like a solid, solid army. The angels did a lot of damage to me, and there were only four of them on the table. (One unit of three and one character.) They took out a Regiment of Ironclads in just two turns. Rather a Pyrrhic victory though - once the Ironclads were out of the way both of my cannon could fire at the angels, and cleared them from the board with one round of fire. I kind of want to play one - I could see how they are meant to be used, and would like to give them a try. The Auld Grump *EDIT* Basilean army list: (Thank you Mantic. ![]() |

I have not had a chance to try Kings of War. I admit that I like GW's 8th edition of WHFB. I had given up on them years earlier (around 3rd) and reviewing the 8th rulebook in the store (much to the malignment of the staff) I purchased because it seemed like a ton of fun with the new terrain rules. Now, I do not have the full rulebook for KoW. I only have the free "trial" rules. Does the Big KoW Rulebook offer similar rules to the random magical type terrain? If not has anyone adapteted or attempted to adapt the GW rules to KoW? |

I've been staring at the Kings of War ruleset for a long time. I am rather interested, mostly because I prefer Fantasy miniature games. However, they don't yet have enough army lists out for me to be able to talk my gaming group into it. If they manage to get army lists out that can use a good majority of the models from Warhammer, I'm sure I could do it. I think at this juncture I'm going to keep painting, and wait until 9h edition Fantasy come out. Maybe they will finally make it more stream lined and less wonky. 6th Edition 40k plays well, but it has the same issues, some things are a little too wonky. ~J |

I have played in a 6,000 point KoW battle - three allied armies per side, 2,000 points each. Kill and Pillage! was the scenario It took two hours - with two new players. No rules arguments. That same game would have taken an entire day in WHFB. Two entire armies completely driven from the field - the middle army on each side took the brunt of conflict. The overall result was a tie - almost exactly the same results on each of the two allied armies, though the points of each of the allies was different. I want to say that the totals for the two sides were within 50 to 75 points. Less than a hundred in any event. Adding a chess clock can make the game brutal - I am a planner, having to make my decisions quickly is a real challenge. (I definitely give chess clocks a big thumbs up. ![]() The Auld Grump |

My biggest draw for KoW (aside from faster play) is the fact that I don't have to rebuy my whole Undead army yet again. All my models are legal. |
