Post subject: | Hallowe'en 2013 - Cult, Geek, and Classic Movies |
The choice for the party this year began with a question: What do you mean you've never seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail or The Princess Bride?! So... not hard to find movies this year, aside from The Lady In The Car, With The Glasses And A Gun. What Cult, Geek, and Classic movies are likely to have been missed by somebody born after 1980? So far: *Classic!* Big Trouble in Little China Monty Python & the Holy Grail The Princess Bride American Werewolf in London Phantasm Night of the Living Dead (not colorized!) The Nightstalker Innocent Blood Lost Boys (I may throw in the sequels as well) Dr, Phibes Rises Again Ladyhawk Lair of the White Worm Freaks (those aren't makeup effects....) Nosferatu (with Klaus Kinsky) *No, Really - It IS a Classic!* Casablanca (yes, there really are people that have never seen it... in a room of a dozen people I was the only one that had seen it) African Queen Psycho The Haunting Not sure about The Maltese Falcon - it hasn't aged well in some ways M (if you ever wonder if Peter Lorre could be scary....) *Silent* Metropolis Nosferatu London After Midnight Phantom of the Opera *Never Heard Of It!* .Rec (one of the scariest zombie movies ever made - but foreign) The Lady in the Car With the Glasses and a Gun *Bad, Bad, Bad!* Santa Claus Conquers the Martians Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter Graveyard Shift Plan 9 From Outer Space Sword & the Sorcerer Shadow of the Hawk Beastmaster What gems and... not-gems... can I add to this pile? So far, I own all of the ones that I have mentioned. The Auld Grump - leaving plenty of time to buy the movies this time. |

Original King Kong and Lost World. If you want supremely not safe for groups, Baba Yaga. Great movie, but REALLY sexual focus. |

I've always been a fan of the old Abbot and Costello movies - particularly (if you're looking for a Halloween feel) Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Abbot and Costello Meet the Mummy. Definitely more on the comedy side, though. |

The Graduate - if just for the soundtrack alone The Treasure of the Sierra Madre - some of the best dialogue written Once Upon a Time in the West - great story and dialogue Gotta 100% agree with The Haunting from 1963. Scared hell out of me and still does. The only special effects is that door pulsing. Every thing else just messes with your mind. |

Rocky Horror Picture Show... but so much better in a theater with a cast and crew doing their thing. I was Riff every Friday night for about 18 months back in the early 90's... |

Okay, looking at the enormous pile of movies that I now have listed.... I need to back up, just a bit, because it looks like I missed my own point. So.... What movies made geeks, nerds, and gamers what they are? What films can be conjured by a single quote? What films make you want to pull out the dice and game? Yet... some have not seen them. *New List* Raiders of the Lost Ark - Snakes, why did it have to be snakes? Big Trouble in Little China - 'That is not water.' 'Black blood of the earth.' 'Do you mean oil?' 'I mean black blood of the earth.' The Princess Bride - Made of quotes! Monty Python & the Holy Grail - 'It's only a model.' (And many, many more!) Silence of the Lambs: 'Quid pro quo, Clarice....' 7th Voyage of Sinbad - the skeleton fight.... Casablanca - Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine. The Great Race - An admirable point of view, for anyone but a soldier. In my profession, to win is imperative. To win easily is a blessing. Frankenstein - It's alive! It's alive! Young Frankenstein - It's Frahnkensteen The Haunting - because.... American Werewolf in London - Mummy, a naked American just stole my balloons.... Innocent Blood - How about... Italian? *The Disney Room* 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - the Nautilus, and the battle with the giant squid. Island at the Top of the World - the other steampunk movie of my childhood. *Nosferatu and Silent* Nosferatu Nosferatu Shadow of the Vampire Metropolis - the very birth of steampunk.... Some of this list may be changed, added to, or removed, but you can see what I mean. Star Wars was deliberately left off - the good version has been gone since Laser Disk went the way of the dodo. You missed a few: Aliens - Get away from her you BITCH! Army of darkness: this... is my broomstick. Conan the barbarian: to crush your enemies, to see them driven before you and to hear the Lamentations of their women. The Goonies: Goonies never say die. Superman II - Kneel befor Zod! And of course: Star Trek II: KHAAAANNNN |

I can't add much to the list (I'm famous for forgetting the name of movies minutes after leaving the theatre -- I remember the plot, scenes, actors names, just not the title). I do have one comment: When I was gaming all the time, just about everything I saw made me want to game. So while I think you have a great list of movies, I think the 'secret sauce' of geekdom and gaming comes from somewhere else. Steve |

Hm... If you're willing to look a smidge later, and are willing to take a Miniseries over a Movie, I'd highly, highly recommend taking a look at The Lost Room. That series is almost made for gamers to get in and play around in, and has a danged good storyline to boot. It's too bad that it never blossomed into a full series - but I would love to play in a setting based on it (heck, even a list of 'seemingly mundane but powerfully magical' items would be much appreciated). |

You seriously are going to complain about Aliens and Wrath of Khan being too mainstream/new when you have Raiders on the list ![]() As for Conan, I'm never going to argue that movie was good, but clash of the titans, excaliber, dark crystal and Conan were the only fantasy movies I remember Pre-1985. And none of the others really has a good quote. |

Your question about quotes added another classic to the list, Dirty Harry's "That's not a gun. This is a gun!" Another source of gameable quotes are the 70s afro hero movies. As for gaming inspiration packed with quotable lines, don't forget Adam West's 1960s Batman. |

Changed themes - too danged many movies, and folks that decided not to wait. The new theme is simply 'Fallen Angels, and Deals with the Devil' - Prophecy, Angel Heart, Gabriel, Legion.... Also... trying out something that I found today - pumpkin ravioli.... http://www.traderjoes.com/fearless-flye ... le_id=1308 Testing it on my girlfriend first. It sounds... ... ... different.... I'm surprised I didn't see Stardust on anyone's list. I tend to rank it up there with The Princess Bride for a light-hearted, romantic, fantasy adventure. Plus, it's got Robert DeNiro as a cross dressing air pirate! |

For your current theme: Exorcist [original] Rosemary's Baby Constantine The Ninth Gate [Johnny Depp & Frank Langella] [Granted the last two are more recent, but some of the younger crowd may still have not seen them.] Original theme that weren't mentioned yet: - C.H.U.D.S. - Journey to the Center of the Earth [original with Peter Mason] - Mysterious Island [original first - then watch the mini-series with Patrick Stewart/Kyle McLaughlin. Somehow I missed last year's SyFy version with Gina Holden, Mark Sheppard & dad W.Morgan Sheppard as "Nemo".] - Night of the Lepus [make it a Deforest Kelly memorial night!] - One Million Years to Earth - SHE [pick any one of the 8 versions - my favorite so far is the 1965 with Ursula Andress. The original 1911 was *silent* - if you can find it...] - Valley of Gwangi [another Ray Harryhausen work with James Franciscus in the original 'Cowboys & Dinosaur' movie] |

proper spelling 'Soylent Green' - but yeah, another good one! and let us not forget Omega Man [original, of course, not the Will Smith remake] and dare we attempt to introduce them to the original Planet of Apes series of movies? |

Heh - the problem that I ran into was that I made the mistake of asking my players for help with the list.... At one point there was over 100 movies on the list.... and a plan to use those that showed up on three or more lists. Problem? They talked to each other - so almost all of that over 100 movies showed up on at least three lists. So, needs must when the Devil drives. Thus far - The Devil & Daniel Webster The Devil & Daniel Churchmouse (kids room) The Gate (kids room) Pirates of the Caribbean 2... dammit. ![]() The Princess & the Frog (kids room) Crossroads (excellent movie!) Sorcerer's Apprentice (kids room) Angel Heart (late night) Gabriel (surprisingly good) Rosemary's Baby R.E.C. Trilogy Ninth Gate Prophecy - the first three movies Pumpkin Head The Omen The Exorcist The Last Exorcism The Rite The Mephisto Waltz The Auld Grump |
