It's summer - which means sales on Steam. Almost over though.  Right now Torchlight II is $5.... Pretty danged easy to get $5 worth of fun out of that game.  The only game that I got from the sale this year was Stardrive - not a bad game at all, but not quite ready for prime time.... The Auld Grump |

I have picked up a couple of things: Just Cause 2, Darksiders 2, Tomb Raider, Evoland, and Mark of the Ninja. I am not sure how I feel about the trading cards yet. |

i've bought: endless space tomb raider walking dead fallout new vegas already finished tomb raider endless space isn't bad but i have to dig in better to appreciate it i was actually looking for some inspiration for a space saga campaign... (i'd like to find some kind of autogenerating universe star systems anomalies planets etc etc) started walking dead seems nice |

Be warned... the XCom remake is... not very good.  No excuse for it, either - Firaxis is generally a good company. However - the original XCom and Terror From the Deep are also on Steam, and at a paltry $5. On the plus side - Xenonauts is currently in Beta on Steam and for $20... you will likely get more play than you will with the XCom remake. (Xenonauts is XCom, in a way that the remake just does not approach.) The Auld Grump - be warned, the Beta is bloody lethal right now. Aliens will target your transport while it is enroute - so give it an escort!) |

Thanks, Grump. I do see your points. A lot of that were things I was hoping would be brought in later in the game. I'm only about half way through now (I hope!). I thought they had added a more "classic" mode where the story was less linear. Although, having only one landing ship is a huge omission that I don't think was ever fixed. I didn't even realize that UFOs just sit and wait for you. I always went after them right away. VERY strange. My major complaint was when enemies just pop onto the map rather than having to maneuver. THAT drove me nuts. |

It is possible that some of that has been addressed, but I got it the first week, and the statements from Firaxis sounded like 'Sorry, that's the way it's going to be! Thanks for your money, suckers!' Look around for reviews other than mine. Heck, look through the archives of Nerf Now... an . For me... I wanted a game that I would still be playing twenty years later - an updated X-Com, not a game 'inspired' by X-Com. Not something that I would play once, then throw on the dust heap. The first DLC was a new character that you could recruit - a heavy. But... really? That was the first thing that they could think of? Are they trying to copy Mass Effect 2? My suspicion is that it came out because @K was getting so much flak about releasing X-Com as a first person shooter. So... this lame duck was released into the wilds. Give Xenonauts a try - not complete yet, but it is already so much better. And actually improves on the original X-Com. The Auld Grump, it's not like I'm bitter or anything.... but $60? For that? |

I never pay full price for games anymore. I got it with all expansions for $10, so well worth what I paid. Looks like all the DLC added more mission types and a few extra customization items, but not much else. I swear their was a classic mode that was more randomized... |

Is Xenonaughts actually decent now? I played some of the Alphas over the last few years and the graphics and gameplay were pretty poor, if I recall correctly. To be honest, I've really enjoyed the European-developed XCOM knockoffs, which you can buy on GOG: , , and for less than $5 each. They aren't perfect. Aftermath is the clunkiest. But they were surprisingly well done. They allow for modding and there are a lot of fan-built mods out there. |
