I don't know if I have mentioned the Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch here, but...
I have been reading the Peter Grant series since first finding Rivers of London - a series set in modern London in which a PC discovers that there is indeed magic in the world.
The less than appealing American title is Midnight Riot, which has a good deal less to do with the subject of the book than the original British title - since the goddesses of the lost rivers of London are rather central to the story.
As are ghosts, magic, and the last remaining wizard working for the London police*.
A very good series, with book 4 coming out this month in England... but not until February of next year in the U.S.
The series was tapped to become a television series last week.
Of late it seems that a lot of the books that I enjoy are getting tagged by TV... Game of Thrones, Terry Pratchett, American Gods... now Rivers of London.
Well worth a read, even if the TV series never happens.

At about this point in the series our hero can just about create a nice glowy light on a reliable basis... his teacher has been doing this a lot longer....
