I'm here to ask you some suggestions...

i can't find a miniature game wich has both good rules and good miniatures:

for sci-fi i REALLY like infinity's miniatures... but i can't tell i'm enthusiast with the rules... (better wh 40k but i don't like the minis).

for the fantasy it's even worse....

i'd like something with this characteristics:
28 mm miniatures (1" base so i can use it in D&D or other PnPs)
skirmish (each miniature counts)
campaign support (something that connects each game)


if for a sci-fi setting i'm really tempted to give infinity a go for a fantasy one i've found none...


if you have any experience with this kind of games can you give me suggestions?
I'd like to hear pro and cons as unbiased as possible (i.e. not "this is the best" and "this sucks")

I am not qualified to answer this question (we play RPGs and board games here...not war games or skirmish games), but I have heard people say good things about Malifaux.

Found on BGG that lists a few. Also seen that Alkemy has been revived by Studio38, but miniaturemarket.com has some deep discounts on the old Kraken-made starter sets.

i've read quite a lot about malifaux (since i have also tons of TCP^^) the game it'seld isn't bad

one problem for me is the 1,5" base (so i can't easily reuse them in D&D or GURPS)
also a bit too much victorian/steampunk for my taste...

rules seem to be great for quick skirmishes!

some miniatures i have to admit are really gorgeous!

I play it some. Good action, beautiful figures. Hard to get enough terrain on the table at times. I've been doing small scale WW2 lately so my Infinity memory is a tad cobwebbed.

Malifaux is really fun. Only had 1 game of it, but I remember having a LOT of fun. Here's a vid with JoeyBerry teaching WarGamerGirl at Adepticon (I timed it to 1:50 to skip the intro chatter)

erm...how about play the game system you want with the rules you want? Why feel tied in to the minis that go with the game system?

I rather like their Kings of War rules - better than I do Warhammer. But definitely designed for big armies. (It handles big armies better than WHFB.)

Deadzone has free Beta rules coming out sometime today (but not yet).

But... my real suggestion goes back to GW - Mordheim for fantasy: Skirmish rules, a campaign system, and characters gain in experience. Necromunda for SF: Same bennies as Mordheim.

Get it while you can - GW is dropping the specialist games line - I do not expect the free downloads to be around much longer.

$8 for the basic rules, $8 ea. for the worthwhile add ons Song of Gold and Darkness, and Song of Wind and Weather. The rules are generic fantasy not tied to any particular line of mini's. They have a nice yahoo group that loves to answer questions. Games are very quick, you can get into a worthwhile game with only a few mini's (I've seen as few as 3, but a kobold force at the recommended level of 300 points will probably have 15+ figures), uses 3d6. It also has a good campaign supp in Songs of Deeds and Glory. Not as cheap as Mordheim (which is free), but not as restrictive, either. I am particulary fond of my dwarven bear cavalry.

Ganesha also has rules for American Civil War, Post Apocalypse mutants, Horror, bug hunts, Pirates, etc.

Yes, there are people that play the whole Rambo/Cheerleader thing, but we have a pretty good group with that kind of activity being in the minority.

If you want to go the squad level sci-fi route I recommend Tomorrow's War by Ambush Alley. It's based on their modern warfare Force on Force system, so it's pretty gritty. The missions are scenario driven, but they have an optional point level system on their forum. It can accommodate "big skirmish" of around 15 to 20 guys, all the way up to big company sized stuff with vehicles.

Sorry, I don't know of any good fantasy skirmish. I just play Pathfinder to get my fantasy fix.

Second for the Song of Blades and Heroes series of games! Seems simple, but has a surprising amount of depth. Just never ever, ever use zombies. They will just hold you back.

That said, I've never found a game that "allows" you to use any miniatures you want (as in, you design them within specifications) except for No Limit/No Quarter. While not a bad game, the rules are a bit vague in spots and lack a certain amount of depth and DEFINITELY geared towards larger armies rather tan skirmish forces. One of the reasons I'm brainstorming my own "GURPS*" of skirmish gaming (*not actually based on GURPS, just inspired by the idea).

mmmh when hearing GURPS and skirmishes some ideas popped in my mind.

let's say you can mostly use regular gurps' rules for fights
to adaptd and speed up movement u could use flexible rulersand free movement (aka move 6 = 6"). then you could grab some templates to determine front sides and back of minis (maybe a sign on the mini's base to know wich is the front is a good idea).
You could somehow use point cost of characters for the minis BUT... through templates to avoid minmaxing adv/disadv...
the problem is to get a good balance with weaponry/defences....

Overall i think it's not a bad base since gurps is higly mortal and adaptable... the big work is on tuning cutting uneeded rules and balancig

The rules are built around building your own - I have seen army lists for GWAR and for G. I. Joe, and played a game with cheap plastic army men fighting against cheap plastic dinosaurs....

i' ve read the beta rules and, yes they are rough but promising!
They should give rules (or applet) to calculate your own miniatures (they would benefit even with a "submit a mini" to evaluate and then publish it).
