So it's been 4 months since I stopped paying attention to the D&D next playtest. Is anyone else still following it or playing it? Any thoughts on the latest rules? It has been almost a year now and the process still seems to me to be a long way from being complete. |

I haven't gotten any of my gaming buddies to try playing it, but I've been downloading the playtest packets and looking through them on occasion. What I see worries me a bit. It still looks like a mash-up of 1st ed, 2nd ed, 3rd ed and 4th ed with some weird changes. For example: - There are no skills per se. Rather, you can choose a limited number of "backgrounds" depending upon your class and level and those function like awfully simplified skills. - Base Attack Bonus has been minimalized. A barbarian's BAB at 20th level is only +5. A cleric's is +3. - The monsters all have amazingly reduced ACs, too. The highest AC of any monster in the bestiary is 18. Asmodeus himself has only a 17 AC. So, in a sense, you're even more a slave to that d20 than before. This feels much more like 1st and 2nd ed, but I don't know that it's going to win back any of the players that they lost with 4th edition. It seems like an odd direction to go, to me. |

The lack of a proper skill system, to me, is a HUGE step back... |

we diverted to Pathfinder when Wizards went to 4th Ed. I picked up a friends 4th Ed book once. We are completely happy with Pathfinder, and are not about to change. I haven't even SEEN 5th Ed. |

I only glanced at 4th edition after finding out how it differed from 3.5. I'm doubt I'll be running 5th edition because I've moved away from DnD and back to Basic Roleplaying instead. Plus the group I play with is playing Pathfinder now, so I probably won't be playing 5th either. |

I will admit that I lost interest a whiles back. Yeah, it was the lack of a skill system. The Auld Grump |

Honestly lack of a skill system would be a game killer for me. But then using the 4e skill system would be a big disappointment. Of course it's not that hard to tack in a skill system to most games. |

Atm i like the 4th edition for the combat rules, and i hate for everything else. That means we use a sort of no-rules roleplaying when out of combat, i can let them have a check or 2 based on the few skills or stats. Next doesn't bring nothing more appealing to me... if i had more time to set up npcs i'd rather play gurps than any incarnation of the d20 |

My regular gaming group loves GURPS. The more I play it, the more I dislike it. |

We are going to try out Dungeon World. Next just seemed to be lacking flavor* the last time we messed with it. Not sure if that is the word I mean, but it is the closest I can come up with right now. |

Someone used this phrase to describe an MMO and I think it applies well to what I've seen of NEXT/5e: It's not BAD, per se, but...it feels like...it has no soul. |

Hmmm. Interesting. I go and check the wizards website for the first time in 6 months today and they have a article all about the skills system they are thinking about. Maybe just maybe they are actually listening to the people on the forums... Or it was just luck I checked today. |

Makes it at least worth looking at, as far as I am concerned. ![]() Lack of skills... bad, bad, bad idea. I really hope that they do a better job of it than they did with 4e.... ![]() The Auld Grump |

I gotta say their recent articles make it sound like they're steering things back more towards 3.0/3.5 than, say, 1st or 2nd ed. I'm still quite skeptical, though. |

I kind of like their idea of modular rules, at least in theory. We shall see how that turns out in the end. |
