Just saw this cool video about an affordable 3D scanner to go with the falling price of 3D printers. I wonder how well it would scan miniatures? http://techcrunch.com/2013/04/04/photon ... e-objects/ |

That is something that would be great to have. Relatively inexpensive, too. |

I expect it will work really well. Its seriously old technology now. However, scanning 3D objects and printing them is copyright violation. 3D scanning will therefore go the same way as MP3 files, videos and torrents. Very very few people will be in the game of scanning. The industry to be watching is commercial 3D printing and there is little movement there. Resolution still isn't good enough unless you spend a huge amount of money. Interestingly, the 3D rendering market is blocked from 3D printing by licensing. I think that will inevitably slow the uptake of 3d printing. The bulk of the rendering market is 'script kiddies' like me. And yeah, I'd like a mini for some of my characters. The software to do this is free. "You're In The Wrong Alley" |

my understanding of copyright laws is that as long as you neither distribute or sell the copy-ed work that you can copy an item you own. |

I can see there being laws against sites hoisting scans of minis. Or selling printed mini copies. But printing up copies of things you own. Hard to say thats currently illegal. Also quite impossible to stop. Scaling would be great fun too. Scan my McFarlane dragons and make them bigger or smaller. No longer have to use the poor D&D mini dragons. What would be really fun is once everyone has 3d printers gaming miniature sites could just sell the print patterns like WWG. Think how much that would save on international shipping. |

The other thing to take into account is international copyright laws. Canada and the US (and other countries) have very different takes on what is okay and what is not. |

the truth is if you use a copy of copyrighted material Publicly ( at The tournament ) that is considered distribution ,Even if you gave away miniatures for free that would be considered distribution and you would be in copyright infringement . But in your own home there is no law against you copying Something regardless of how the lawyers would want to scare you to believe otherwise . You can destroy that image If you can alter that image, You can make of thousands upon thousands of copies of that image If you paid for it it's yours Plain and simple. But if you gave even one copy a way to a friend , or did anything publicly with it show it at an art show ect .. Then you would be guilty of copyright infringement . But getting back to The threads original post ,the digital production of a miniature is growing in the industry and I can see the day that some companies may choose to sell the file when 3D printiing becomes an affordable reality . Look how the whole music industry as changed as a result of digital files. this Web site is a testament to that reality "the times they are a changing and better start swiming or you willl sink like a stone" ...
